I need to plant 2 or 3 trees to provide partial privacy from my neighbor. I'd like a species that will thrive in the rocky soil of Connecticut. Some sort of Conifer would be my first choice esthetically. Any thoughts?

If its privacy you are after, I'd go for a Cedar. I believe its the red cedar you'd want, thuja occidentalis 'pyramidalis' commonly known as pyramidal arborvitae. The greenery is lush and soft, they don't tend to drip pitch on surrounding things, and there are no cones to speak of for clean-up. The trees will average around 6-8' across and probably 25-30' tall when mature. The only weakness I have noticed in that in extremely heavy and wet snows, the snow tends to stick to the greenery and bend down the branches and tree. A gentle shake will sluff off the offending snowload and the tree will right itself within a day or so.

Cedar's nice but...

These will be planted in the woods so I'm not too concerned about droppings and cleanup etc. What about Fir or Spruce. Will they be too costly or grow too slow?

Don't forget about the deer problem we have here also. Arborvitae and hemlock will get eaten. Maybe the spruce or fir. White pine grow quite fast but might need more sun.
