Ben,

I suppose that since I`ve primarily run Oregon for the past 25 years or more, what seems like abnormal stretch to you may seem normal to me. I don`t need to retensioning very often though. I ran a few loops of Stihl 3/8 pitch a few years ago and I thought that it stretched excessively. I ended up taking a link out of every loop before the teeth were worn out and I ran the now off pitch chain out of spite because of what I paid for it. It was so bad that I wondered if there was something wrong with the hardness of the tie straps.

I bought a roll of Sabre 928 which is .325x.058 chisel, from Jeff. I`ve only used a few loops so far but I think it`s the best .325 chain I`ve ever used. Too bad that Sabre is defunct because I`d like to get some in .050 or .063 for the small Stihls.

I see quite a few discussions about so called "chain stretch". I have never measured one but I would bet it is not the tie straps that have stretched or the rivets holes would surely loosen. Must be wear between rivet and drive link. Could lubrication be the factor or is the internal machining rough that wears in initially?

Good questions FranK, I`ll try to provide answers later after I dig out a chain or two and measure them.

I am really disappointed in the posts so far. I thought all of you knew the only chain to use was "pro chain" from "JustDavid". Those of you who have noticed his BS techniques on ebay no what I am talking about.

In all honesty the only options here are Stihl and Oregon. The better Stihl dealers can sell Stihl chain under Oregon. There are also those who charge $30 for a 16" loop of .325, .063 RS chain. It is amzing that this is the same dealer that brags about his "mile long plaque".

Stihl and Oregon is the same price from my dealer; $1.00 per bar inch, I like the Stihl. Was thinking of buying that $800.00 Mac 10 10 Pro Saw from Just David but I wanted that Pro chain with the hacked rakers to show these guys what a real saw would do but lost the ebay #. I'm sure they will be back on sooner or later.

I wish I had money to burn so I could but some "pro chain" from him. I traded emails with him last week. He refuses to tell me what chain it is. He will not name a brand. He finally said it was a hybrid chain. I guess he is a chain manufacturer now. I asked him what cutters and tie starps he was using but he refused to respond. It seems he believes "his hybrid chain" will out Windsor, Oregon, Carlton, and yes even Stihl out of business.

Hi Bill,

If you will be so kind as to find me some 1/2 pitch full house chisel chain for Dennis C. I will make you some of my own special "Pro" chain. I won`t divulge all of my secrets but the chain is primarily comprised of Oregon "Cord Cutter" .404 semi chisel cutters spun onto True Value brand .325 tie straps so that the pitch is almost equal to 3/8. The chain is further prepared in a proprietary process called "high speed stone grinding" to remove the bluing from the cutters and make them appear chrome plated from a distance when travelling at about 60mph, and to flatten the topplate. After this treatment, I then bend the depth gauges over with Gypo`s mini pipe wrench after heating the tooth to a uniform 800°F using a carbonizing flame on the old gas axe, er, ahh, I mean heat treatment system which also applies a micro thin high carbon, hard cutting edge. Voila´, race chain! This chain is unbelievable, it certainly isn`t for the average woodtick!
