I still have both of the 330 cylinders that were removed when those two were upgraded to 60cc. Those cylinders and piston were bought from Millennium Mowers here in Lincoln. He told me they were off the PP380 and they bolted right on. Both saws are in Missouri but now my curiosity is peaked after looking at your photos.

Randy if you need a couple of cylinders let me know.

Thanks for the offer Jerry. These saws are becoming more and more interesting to me. Between the Partner P70 I just finished and these little Poulans I wonder if I even need all those Stihls. :D

Randy, that 3300 is for sure a older model then the PP330.

Forgive me, but I'm trying to understand the point of using the 3300 jug and slug on a 330?

I'm watching along to see what happens. I have some of these series of saws and I really like them alot but to be honest, I have not been deep inside one. Mine were all in good shape when I got them and I just don't have time to tear a perfectly good running saw down just to see whats in them. :)

I guess I need to find a rebuilder sometime.:msp_rolleyes:

The Craftman saw is a donor of parts, top cover, air filter and cover, etc....

I'm building a 330, with a 330 jug. At least I think I am. :) I got this old yellow Poulan in a trade, locked up and missing some parts, it does have a 330 sticker on it though. :D I confess that I don't know much at all about this series of saws. I am a quick learner though.

Ok, I got ya, your just putting parts that are on hand together. Your actually makeing some strides backwards with the whole deal but with your extra work it may end up better.

The 330 has quite a few improvements over the Craftsman/3300.

Stock for stock the 330 is stronger then the 3300, I figured that it was because of a improved cyl along with a bigger carb.

The cooling and filtration on the 330 was improved as well.

OK now I'm really confused. :dizzy:

The backward strides being in the air filter, or the covers???

That is all I'm using from the Craftsman. I did notice the air filter was small. I have considered trying to use a 026 filter.

The filter and covers for one. The P/C as you see are better as well, at least with the chrome plating on they cyl. I assumed the cyl was for improved perfomance as well. I know the cases are different but I'm not sure what all is different there.

Like I said, I have not been deep inside them. (yet)

Welp, you sure do know these Poulans Mark. Even without digging deep inside this series you nailed some key points.

I didn't disassemble the 330 so I was in the dark on more than a few things. The air filter and cover is completely different than the Craftsman saw I have here. I don't have the complete setup for the 330 but I can tell that it would hinder intake flow badly to use the 3300 setup. I big backward stride for sure!!! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with me here Mark.

It looks as though I still need a set of covers and a air filter setup for this saw.

The differences are huge. Craftsman on the right.

Poulan 330 made in 2001

!985 is the date on the Craftsman. Not sure of the accuracy of this.

The Poulan part numbers for the parts I need are:

Cyl Cover: 530049271
Carb Cover: 530053440
Air Filter: 503553902

I'll finish building it with this small filter setup, but really would like to find these newer style parts.

If nothing else I'll get them new.

Your using the 330 case correct?

Did you try the 3300 cyl cover on the 330 case yet?

I'm not sure it will even fit as the 330 case is wider.

I could look but I just came in from the shop already....

Dang it Mark!!!! You are correct yet again!!!! I have a Craftsman saw here that don't help me one bit. Nothing is the same on these things. Sorta reminds me of working on a Ford. LOL

I'll just have to cough up a little dough and get the parts I need new, at least they are still available............. Right??? :dizzy:

I sorta feel like I'm getting sent back to school. Thanks for the lessons Mark, aka The Poulan Guru. :D

I may be the source of most of this trouble.
i incorrectly identified the craftsman as a 330 rather than a 3300 and then sent it to mr. mastermind.
obviously my 'poulan-fu' is not as strong as yours is, mr. mark.

I've just got a lot to learn Rich!!!!

I'll just fix both saws!!!

Cool huh????

Sorry to have brought it up!

Like I said, I have not been deep inside this series, but I have done some homework and I do have some here to compare to each other.

I will say that this series is growing more on me all the time, there well made saws that don't get the respect they deserve.

You got the right idea though, fix em both!

I'm not sure on the 330 covers still in the system but they come up on ebay from time to time and even parts saws go pretty right.

There are still lots of parts that interchange among them anyway so a parts saw makes sense.

The parts I need show up as "in stock". Thanks for your input here Mark, as you know I'm just here to learn. :help:

The bearings finally arrived. I use a lot of these bearings, this is a popular size. These are rated at 20 - 25 thousand rpm.

poulan330038.jpg

I can get a much better deal on the sealed bearings so I just pop out the seals.

poulan330040.jpg

They are pre-lubed.

poulan330042.jpg

We don't want the grease in this application so I clean it out and oil them with two-stoke oil after installing them.

poulan330044.jpg

I use starting fluid to clean the crank and bearings...

poulan330045.jpg

Then I used red locktite to be sure the crank doesn't spin inside the bearings. This is not something I do on all saws, but this one does not have a real tight interference fit here.

poulan330046.jpg

I heat the case halve so the bearings will just slide right in with no resistance, easy as pie.

Here is the bottom end buttoned back up.

poulan330051.jpg

In this pic you can see the epoxy I poured to allow the transfers to be matched to the jug base.

poulan330048.jpg

Working on a pop-up piston next.

Oh yeah. The covers and air filter are on the way as well. Everything should come together before the West KY GTG. :D

Looks good, your using the 3300 top end right?

I also have been doing the same thing, buying ebay sealed bearings and removing the seals. Good deals that way. I think I left the the outer brg seals on my Husky 65. I figured it can't hurt and so far I think I'm right.

What size brgs are those, 6202, 6203?

They are the 6202 Mark. I'm using the 330 top end, plated jug, better transfers, although the timing numbers are quite a bit different than the 3300 I measured at the beginning of this thread.

I just got a new lathe and am still working on jigs and tooling. I should be ready to turn the base on the jug and make a pop-up in a few days.

I finally got a chance to do some more on this build.

I hadn't used a lathe in about 20 years, but after a few test cuts to get acquainted with this little machine and I started turning a mandrel to spin my jug on.

poulan330057x.jpg

I knurled the top end and near the bottom of the jug so I wouldn't have such a tight fit down the length of the jug. I also made a recess to allow me to chamfer to end of the bore.

poulan330060.jpg

Finally spinning the jug!

poulan330058.jpg

I could have relocated the impulse line to the case, but I just made a notch in the case so I could still get my line on it. I turned .045 off and still have over .250 of flange.

The intake port roughed in.

poulan330065.jpg

I had to improvise a way to mill this spot on the piston, it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. Gotta get a milling table for the drill press, or a small mill. LOL

poulan330069.jpg

Exhaust raised and opened up a bit.

poulan330061.jpg

Exhaust polished and the popup showing it's head.

poulan330071.jpg

Now the pay off.

200 PSI !!!

poulan330074.jpg

Here's the numbers I ended up with.

Intake duration: 155°
Exhaust duration: 152°
Blowdown: 24°
Squish .020
