I stumbled on a poulan 5200 for a good price. It starts and runs good, I think. They claim it was started last year, and with new gas, it started on the 10th pull. It is loud as crap in my little garage with the door closed and it smoked a lot more than my other (newer) saws. (cough cough!!)

I am posting for several reasons, and ANY comments are appreciated.

1. It is OK , but I would like a couple of parts if I can find them.
The handle is bent some.
I cannot yet get the muffler off, the bolts seem to be rusted to the muffler and I am in danger of tearing out the flat screwdriver slots (have PB Blaster on for a few days?)

The bar has a replaceable windsor sprocket on it and it looks like they figured out their own rivits. It wiggles quite a lot in the bar. So I would consider a new bar. The current one is 24"

The chain tensioner works but has been fashioned out of parts from the local hardware store.

2. Any general opinions on the saw?

And FINALLY!!! remember me from the "SMALLEST SAW FOR AN ALASKAN" thread.

Is this saw too old to consider using it?

The specs are:

year 1975-1980 85cc carb tillotson HS-176A

Thanks!!

Should be fine. Run it a bit to get a feel for it, fix what needs fixing, then "commence a millin'.

Sure someone on here can help with parts.

Mark

I've got a 5200 parts saw kicking around. The handle's fine on it - full wrap - and I'm pretty sure the chain adjuster is OK too. PM me if you're interested.

The thing is making me mad!!

Anyway, Here are pictures of the project. It starts and runs good if I can get the DAMN pull rope thingy to work.

I know everyone likes picture so here it is. It has been completely painted and the stickers were made by a friend.

Pull Rope

I have a couple of the Poulan 5200's and like them. As for the pull rope, it is something that most 5200's had a problem with. The only thing I can tell you that may work is to take the pull rope assembly apart and clean it well. After words spray Teflon spray on it for lubrication, and I say this because if one uses oil or grease it will collect saw dust in the moving parts faster. Another thing is to check the engaging paws on the flywheel for broken springs, they do break. Also, this is one of my favorite saws Poulan made as they have great power and a strong anti-vibe system that is well built. For a saw that was made in the late 70's it is still a practical saw to run today.

What kind of paint did you use? It looks great! Matt

Sorry, I missed that this thread was still alive.

Matt, I hate to admit it, but my neighbor painted it with a pretty cheap looking can of spray paint. He just found anything that was about the correct color.

What I'm most proud of is the lettering that my buddy made. He is an auto trim person and has a vinyl cutter. He programs what he want's and the machine works like a plotter with a little sharp knife and cuts the letters from a roll of vinyl.

Took my old 5200 off the shelf and started it the other day.....after a lapse of about 10 years. After installing the carb kit that I ordered and buying a new chain, I'm sure it will revive the KID in me again. Same old rope-pull problems here. New saws have many improvements, but in its day that thing was a screamer..!!
