I hate being the one to bump such an old thread, but searching has been fruitless.

I have the duckbill but that dang little spring retainer shot out and is now gone forever. Does anyone have a reference number or source for that little sucker?

Thanks,
Chuck

Well, after some googling, I was able to find multiple sources. The part is a Self Locking Internal Retainer Ring - 5/16 OD. TI-31 or TI-031 is the correct part number. The problem is finding them in desired quantities. Most places had them in mass quantity.

I suspect they might all be the same, I used one for a Husqvarna on a Stihl 170 or 180 recently. Looked and and fit exactly like OEM.

My problem wasn't the duckbill, but the little retaining ring that holds it in. The duckbills are very common but just about everyone uses a different method to retain them. I couldn't find another saw that used the little spring clip where I could get a part number. I had to resort to "search engine shopping". The ones I got from Grainger worked great and are on the peg board now, ready for the next time I need one.

How about doing the next guy a favor and post the Graingers part number?

So this holds the duck bill into the gas cap?
correct, here's a pic that may help. I used the package from HD in a pinch. I peened the star washer flat as the teeth are angled up to bite I guesss. But you can see it fits the duck bill perfectly. There's a better part out there but this worked on one saw I needed.

Thanks for the picture. On my Homelite SXL, the saw runs well but when I turn it off fuel runs back through the carburetor and spills out of the saw. When I open the fuel fill cap the flow stops. This seems to indicate that pressure is building up and I assumed inserting the duck bill so that it opens to the atmosphere would solve the problem, opposite of your situation.

The duckbill valve is designed to allow air into the tank (to prevent a vacuum with the saw is consuming fuel) but holds pressure in the tank. If your saw leaks fuel through the carburetor when the tank is pressurized, you probably need to rebuild the carburetor and replace the metering needle.

You can also find the star retainers from McMaster Carr (https://www.mcmaster.com/products/retaining-rings/push-on-internal-retaining-rings/). I suspect I bought the 5/16" ones but I don't remember. Getting the new ones started in square can be a challenge.

So the fuel seems to leak back through the carburetor only when the saw is turned off after running for about ten minutes. I pulled the duck bill out. It will be interesting to see if the saw operates properly or if I need to put it back in. In other words does the tank being pressurized a requirement of running.

I run Amsoil Saber 40:1 in all my equipment. I try to keep them tuned just a bit on the rich side.

I don't think you can go wrong with any modern 3 stroke oil running 32:1, 40:1, or even 50:1. The most important thing is to be sure and put the oil in the mix...
