Poulan S25DA, is it worth getting running?

Hello!

I recently inherited an old S25DA, and I took the carb cover and flywheel housing off. the first thing I noticed was that there were absolutely no air filters. Either my wife's grandfather ran it without them, or they disintegrated over the last however many years.

It was running OK when I started it the other day before I knew the air filters weren't there.

Also to note, there was a TON of sawdust caked in the flywheel housing. my question is, did the saw potentially get damaged by running it without the air filters?

Thanks!
Johnathan

If you are piss revving in your garage, probably not. If you are running it in wood, yes, as debris can be sucked through the carb into the cylinder.

Ok, I'll have to strip it down to see if he had run it without the air filters. I've taken most of the gunk out now from the starter fan casing, and from looking at the carb cover it was fairly clean. hopefully the cylinder and piston are clean.

I started some of the teardown, but i'm stuck on removing the handle and carb housing. I've removed the three bolts after removing the carb, along with the screw that attaches the handle to the fuel tank housing, but it isn't giving. I dont want to pry too hard, but has anyone else had experience tearing down an S25DA?

I've only taken 7 or 8 apart, but the triangular shaped intake flange gasket can be stuck down tight, and probably tear apart when it does come loose.

Try soaking it for a few days with PB Blaster, diesel, or other solvent.

Get a spare gasket, or material to make one first.

Pull the muffler off and check the piston and cylinder for scoring/obvious signs of wear. I've had 30+ s25s come across my bench over the years, half had air filters. Same true for 3400 saws. The only ones that had low compression/trashed p&c were saws that were strait gassed. Do a compression check and pull muffler before you tear it down

Hey all,

Thanks for your input! pulling the muffler everything looks good. I'm waiting for the air filters to come in, but I've also noticed that the duckbill check valve in the gas cap has disintegrated, and gas keeps bubbling out of the tank. I know that the duck bills aren't being made anymore, but is there a different way to let the air needed in and not let the gas out? I think i've seen people say they've used tiny screws?

Try eBay just type in duck bill valve.

I understand that duckbills are still being produced, but does anyone know the size that fits in the gas cap?

You can use an echo trimmer gas tank breather valve if you can't find a replacement cap. Drill a hole through the center of the cap so a piece of fuel line fits it nice and snug, then attach the vent and you're done.

A Homelite duck bill will fit, available at lots of outlets Make sure you get all the old duckbill out as it will have turned to Goo

Hi All, sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have this question on the poulan thread and haven't gotten an answer.

To save time and prevent reposting it, here is the link to my question: Poulan thread

The post I have under that also asks if anyone knows the dimensions of the thrust washer / washer that is between the case and the sprocket?

Also, Happy Fathers Day to all the fathers out there!

Thanks for the info. I was able to get a duckbill valve for the gas cap. the question I had in the poulan thread (the link i had in my post) is asking about the fuel line and gas leaking around the line and the gas tank.

I think its 1/8"

Also if you get some small flexible wire and/or hemostats it will make the job easier. Use the wire to pull the fuel line through. Just pierce of the sidewall of the fuel line, wrap the wire around itself and pull gently.
