I could not resist

Main Entry: fir
Pronunciation: 'f&r
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English fyrh; akin to Old High German forha fir, Latin quercus oak
1 : any of a genus (Abies) of north temperate evergreen trees of the pine family that have flattish leaves, circular leaf scars, and erect female cones and are valued for their wood; also : any of various conifers (as the Douglas fir) of other genera
2 : the wood of a fir

Up in the PNW (Whatcom County to be exact) Fir is a staple wood. Even though it is a softwood it is a) plentiful, b) plentiful, c) pleasant smelling, d) adequate supply of heat.

Mix in some Alder for coaling and you've got a great fire. Fir, like other evergreens, is a resin-based wood so creosote build-up is quicker. As long as you get your chimney sweeped regularly it shouldn't be a problem.

I have seen it sold for $120 - $160 cord.

I got a little side-tracked but came back to the original question.
