I was at a hardware store tonite that is also a Stihl dealer, I never really shop there but the wife was grocery shopping next door. So I think you guys can relate to which store I wanted to spend my time at. Anyway, as I was browsing among the line of Stihl saws, trimmers, etc. I ran across the gallon jugs of stihl bar oil. I must admit I havent bought any bar oil this year because of all of the %#@+&!! snow :angry2: I havent been able to cut wood since the first part of Dec. Sticker shock got the best of me when I saw $16.95 per gallon :jawdrop: WTF!! Has the price of bar oil really got that expensive?? Scared me so bad that I ran for the grocery store to shop with the wife.

I have been using veggie oil in my saws for about 2 years now. The price of that stuff was part of the reason I switched. I think I pay $9-10 dollars for a 1.25 gallon jug of it at Sam's club

Hmmmm... oil threads are popping up like whack-em-o on AS lately. Gary cannot hit the oil thread gophers fast enough! :deadhorse:

(Red) Polan Pro Bar Oil in the black jug for $5.99 at Orschlens. In the 1/100th of a second it takes to get slung off the chain does it make that much difference what brand or type it is ?

Like the little girl in the pet store buying mice said when asked what color she wanted ... "Mister, I dont think my pet snake gives a $hit !"

How much do I really want to spend over the 5-6 year life of the bar trying to preserve it anyway ? Bars, chains, drums, and rims or sprockets are consumable products like the oil.

I know what you mean about the oil, but my old lady has a snake that will only eat white mice, honest.

The Stihl orange gallons are $7.00 at one of the Stihl dealers, 11.99, and 14.99 at the two others. Guess which dealer I visit? I picked up two cases, $40 is the case price, bringing it to $6.66 per gallon. Got these last Tues 1/6/2009.

iCreek, For that $$ I dont blame you for buying from him and buying ahead. At $7 a gallon, the difference is a new bar, rim and 3 good firewood chains from him. It adds up over time. In a few years that will pay for the saw of your choice to set back for later.

FWIW, Sears has their gallon-sized Crapsman-branded bar and chain oil on sale for around $6.25/gallon this month.

Since I work there, it's convenient and I get a bit more of a discount.

That's some sticky stuff when you pour it. Don't know who their vendor is for it, but it seems to work well.

Yeah I stocked up a little on the premix also, his prices are $5.50 for the 6-pack 1 gallon, and $7.50 for the 6-pack 2.5 gallons. 20" yellow chains $15, 18" were $14 and my 20" bar was $33, all Stihl. It is about a 30 minute country drive to Chamois Missouri, but when we go we stock up. I see why they are voted 'best Stihl dealer in Missouri'. They greet you at the door, and work on your saw while you wait, plug, tunes ups, etc. Kind of neat 'ol farm place.

Go to a truck repair shop and have them fill a gallon jug or 3 for you of synthetic 50 wt. transmission oil, all the newer big rigs run this type of oil now, it makes great bar oil, and much cheaper in bulk 55 gal. drums. It still pours good at minus -50f, the synthetic oil doesn't get thick in the cold like regular oil.

I paid $14.99 for a gallon of the Orange Stihl oil a couple of weeks ago. I won't be buying the Stihl brand any longer.

Just goes to show the markup at some of these dealers.. But the higher ones will probably argue that it was the high cost of oil. Uhuh...

13.99 here for the gallon orange jug, but I get a 20% discount, so it's not that bad. What is bad here, is Yamaha outboard oil, 32.99 per gallon if you don't buy bulk.

How many jugs of bar oil do ya'll go thru in a year?

I guess I still stick with the green jugs of the cheap Poulan brand stuff at wally world. They got em at 5.75 a gallon, and dont really have any complaints about the stuff. Seems to work just as good as the spendy stuff.
Besides, getting up there in years now, just had another birthday, and if I bought a jug that wasnt green I would wander around the shop for hours looking for that green jug before i remembered that I supposed to be looking for a orange jug.:)

I bought a orange jug around october. It was $8 a gallon. I have now switched over to bailey's woodland pro oil. Seems to work well. Sticks to the bar and chain and flows well when cold.

Husky Low temp is $9.99 at the local dealer.
Local Hardware has "Do-It" brand Low-temp bar oil for $7.99 but that stuff wont make it out of the Jug before dinner when it's cold out.

I'm with Ks on this one. As long as it flows and sticks, I'll run it.

Stay safe!

Seems to me that the $ 16.95 a gallon store is doing some price gouging and Stihl should be called in to intervene. I am sure they don't want their dealers charging more than list price......if there is one for oil.
