Pricing Difference White Ash vs. Black Cherry

A guy is selling a face cord of White Ash for $80

Black Cherry is $110.

Is this a pyschological marketing thing or is black cherry THAT much better?

Really I can't see any real reason to charge more for the cherry I would almost think the ask will burn longer. The wood is cut for firewood right? It might be worth more to a gunstock maker or to a craftsman but a fireplace won't be able to tell the diff. Unless he is trying to market to smokers. Some folks like to use fruit wood and I guess that would work. Usually its apple or pear but wild cherry might work?

The aroma and use for smoking draws a better price for some woods. For heating I think the Cherrry does have better BTUs than Ash. If it is %14 better or not I dont know. I'm sure the smell of it is more than %14 better though.

Hickory here is quite scarce. Guys in Arkansas have so much of it that they burn it for heat and think nothing of it. Same for Mesquite, it doesnt grow here and Texans cut it like its a weed.

NO comparison here: white ash is gold for firewood. Splits easy, much higher BTU/lb, light to carry, and it can be used near green or unseasoned. :agree2: Cherry's are not too high on the BTU scale for heat; better for furniture or gunstocks. Besides, the ashes may not be around next generation because of the Emerald Ash Borer in the midwest and coming soon to the northeast.

White ash = 25,000 Btu/lb
Black Cherry = 23,500 Btu/lb

I think the ash is a better buy for numerous reasons, including heat content. The black cherry, however, turns beautifully on a lathe and smokes good meat.
