I just have to share this one with you guys!

A Couple comes in today with a 455Rancher that they bought from us a couple of months ago. The problem was that it wasn't oiling due to them running summer bar oil in it. I explained that the oil drive gear was probably stripped, and would need to be replaced. They had this real obvious look of anguish on their faces. So, I said "You guys doing some cutting today?" And the girl says "Yeah, wood for heat. We probably have enought to get through the night though". It's supposed to be 5 degrees tonight, and they're out of wood! Nothing like planning ahead folks!

I told them to come back after lunch and it would be ready.

Good job Spike, dayumm good job. Thats why your customers love ya ole boy, you saved them many a cold nite. As for them its nothing new, everyone seems to wait till the last minute. I get those same stories all the time and like you I try to fix em up fast as possible. That couple will be your customers for life now as well they should be, good job!!!!!

people still use wood heat ? lol

kidding, but it seems like its fading away so fast. we went from selling over 1000 cords a month for the winter months down to 200 in the past 3 years

Spike, we just bought a house in Phoenicia where are you? Maybe I'll drop by with a saw someday.

We're right on RT 28 across from Dependable Energy, just past the Mobil station. You go right past us on your way to Phoenicia! I was up there to the bank today. Stop in and say hi.

Was it covered under warranty?

And it could be that this couple are both straight out trying to make ends meet

Yea everyone does it lol. We are just coming out of a pretty bad ice storm many many homes with power loss due to down lines and trees. Everyone always waits till the VERY LAST MOMENT to look for a Generator OR to dig out the one they already own and SEE if it will RUN. I sold many many chain saws and power pruners this week as well as many many bars and chains fixed and sold alot of generators. We had sold every generator we had in stock and our store was in the dark lol I was using LED cordless lead lights to fix saws and generators kept our customers happy as well. Now today even my ole procrastinating self am ready for the next power outage I finally made a power cord hook up to run our shop from our demo tractor and pto generator. So yea we all PROCRASTINATE.

You must have a huge pile of wood?

Cool, I was by the other day. You must have been procrastinating. It was the holidays.

They drive a Saab. But I still cut them a deal and gave them a gallon of winter oil on the house. They are good people and I just didn't want to be part of them running out of wood.

It really isn't warranty if the saw is left outside when the temp drops in the single digits and the summer oil is as thick as chewing gum. We'll probably see a few more this week now that winter finally showed up.

Good Job. You did the right thing. I enjoy reading posts like this.

I got a call on night for firewood. It was about 4 pm and I had to load and milk before dropping it off. It was about a 40 min drive to get there. I pull up in front of a big old farm house. A young lady answers the door and wanted me to unload it around the side of the house close to the back door. By this time its getting on about 9:30 I had to be at tech school at 7 the next morn.
So, being nice I back around the house and start stacking it up. Out comes the lady and here little brother to help. As I am unloading she tells me her brother trying to cut some old elm there by the back but the saw would not cut. I looked at it and the chain was filed down to nothing. I suggested they get a new one. As we finished unloading the lady told me how her dad has been sick for a few weeks and had not been able to cut wood and they just used the last when they called me. Their mom worked nights, So the lady was taking care of her sick dad and little brother too. I found out she went to the same tech school I did. I left there that night feeling good. When she asked how much She owed me I took one look at the lady and said 10 should cover the gas.
I sure felt good after that. A week later at school she stopped me to talk to me. She told me her dad was getting around better and how her whole family wanted to thank me again for the wood. She wanted to even by my dinner that day. I think that was the best cheeseburger and pepsi I ever ate.
Sometimes one just does things to make life go on alot nicer. I just got to say AS is full of us folks that love to help others and make things go smoother for others. The lady in the story I never did chat with her much after that, but I drove by there every now and then to see if the wood pile needed some help.

"PPPFFFFFFFFTTTT!!!!" Hear that? There goes you karma out the window for tooting your own horn.

j/k - good thing you did, there. It always feels good to lend a helping hand to someone down on their luck (as opposed to just being lazy). I've been on both sides of that fence, and I MUCH prefer to be the one helping the other guy out. It makes mindful of the blessings ("good fortune" if you prefer) I have.

Was she hot?

Yeap its always nice to help out others when they are in need. I have ran into some real characters over the years. Some leave a lasting impression on you good or bad. As they say what goes around comes around.
Well, she was a very striking brunette with a great smile. She had beautiful blue eyes too.

OK how do you tell if you have summer bar oil, I have read that they make diffrent oil but how do you know which you have or is it like if you don't buy winter oil assume it is summer oil?

What temps are summer oil ok to cut at? over 40 degrees, over 50 degrees?

I had my wife pick op the cheapest oil at the local farm supply the other night. I went to use it and it was very pourable in the teen's we have here. SO, I read on the side and it was a winter oil. I know I have seen that oil jug on the shelf there in the summer too. I think it was called Pro Bar. I will double check and also see where it came from. It sure beats that green bottle from Wal- Mart. The stuff poured just about as easy as 10 wt motor oil.

you mean bar oil isn't all the same? LOL

it's funny how everyone laughs at me when i use only stihl or husky oil.even low temp when the weather dictates.then i say hmmm, why do my saws look nice and yours don't?your bars are black and have a lip, mine still have paint on them.and i use mine almost everyday!
