I have my project saw partially disassembled for cleaning. I have the engine removed from the tank and have been going at it with Simple Green and various brushes. I found some good threads on cleaning saws and today I'm going to look for the Castrol blue stuff.

Paint- I see some great paint jobs on project saws when I search. Is there such a thing as Stihl paint and is it available at the dealer? I think I'll repaint the white metal parts.

The chain adjustment screw head is buggered up and needs to be replaced. I removed the sheetmetal cover and can see the workings of the adjuster, but how do I get it out?

The saw has it's original piston and cylinder but it's tired. I think the bottom end is fine so I bought a piston/cylinder kit from Baileys. The kit doesn't come with the bearing for the wrist pin, should I replace that? I always did on the moto-x bikes I used to work on.

Are service manuals available to the public or is that a dealer only thing?

I'll be bugging the local dealer in a few days, just wanted to get as much knowledge beforehand. Just for laughs I'm going to ask him for prices on new plastic. Thanks everyone!

Did you buy it on ebay? There is plunty of parts for sale there and you can find Stihl paint there too. Or just hit up your dealer.

You're looking for the Castrol Super Clean (or generic) which is purple, not blue.

Stihl does indeed sell the paint. See your dealer for this.

The chain adjuster should unthread partially or completely, in order to disassemble it.

It is never a bad idea to replace the wrist pin bearing. See your dealer for this as well.

Service manuals are available, but are supposed to be dealer only. Many dealers won't sell these to the general public, but some will. There are also PDF copies floating around on the site, which I'm sure someone will send you one shortly if you ask nicely.

The price of plastic parts will probably make your jaw drop. Either look for good used ones, or you could look up Lakeside53's thread on cleaning up plastic to near new condition, that he posted a couple months back, and see if yours will clean up decent.

I found a generic purple cleaner, it is definitely stronger than Simple Green. I have the case pretty much cleaned up. I keep thinking if I split the case I can get everything perfectly clean, paint it and add to my tool collection at the same time. My practical side says put it back together and use the thing. :dizzy: :dizzy: Opinions anyone?

TimberPig- I got the chain adjuster out just like you said, turned the adjuster to the right and it popped right out. Thanks! And the wrist pin bearing is on the list.

KMB and TimberPig- that's a great thread on restoring the plastic. It's definitely worth a try.

ktoom- I'll check out eBay tonight as see what I can find, thanks!

Anyone have a service manual or IPL pretty please? :) Tearing down this saw has been FUN! :givebeer:
