My boss always climbs with a, I think, 13 foot tall pruner. He always keeps it with him for setting ropes and breaking dead branches off, well he has been teaching me to climb and now I always bring a pruner. We had a couple new guys who where line clearance trimmers and they always climbed without a pruner.

So is it not common for a hook or pruner to be brought up with you?

generally not. You can always have the groundie put it on your rope if you need it. Most tree guys do have extendable pruners and pole saws, but they generally stay on the ground and are sent up if needed.

If you need it you can always have someone send it up. Thats why god gave us the clove hitch.

I don't. Like the others have said the groundie can easily send it up. Even if I were climbing solo I would leave it on the ground with a throw line tied to it and pull it up later. I carry enough stuff up with me. :msp_wink:

When trimming I almost always carry a 6ft pole pruner with a two ft. extension up in the tree with me. That and my hand saw and loppers. Pole pruners no problem, it carrying a pole saw up with you thats a pain. You can easily advance the pruner hanging it on a branch above you. Pole saw don't hang to well. Beastmaster
