It it absolutley necessary to prune the roots on a evergreen before using a tree spade to move it? If so, how do you go about this process? Secondly, how long would it take from the time of prunning the roots to moving the tree? Paul

Absolutely necessary? No but it may be beneficial.
How do you go about this process? I would measure the desired size of root ball and dig vertically there.
Secondly, how long would it take from the time of pruning the roots to moving the tree? I would estimate from 3 to 6 months with six months probably being better on such large trees.

A tree spade is the only practical way to root prune anything with a ball 30'' or larger. You may get some partial benefit from using a spade shovel stomped into the ground full depth.
