I first got into the world of chainsaws last summer when my wife and I bought a place in the country. I started with a MS 290 for firewood. So far this winter I've burned 4 cord or so and I've got 8 or 9 on the ground. The past couple months I've been running the nuts off of the 290 cutting cedar. I've been runnin through 5-6 gallons of fuel a week so it not getting much of a break but it's pulling it's weight. On the patch I'm cutting now I've found some walnut, well I've been looking for a reason to buy a new saw. This seemed like as good of a reason as any. I was looking for a good used 440 but no luck, Today I found a good used MS 460 with a 20" b&c at the local dealer for $440. They let me take it out and make some cuts, that's pretty much all it took. It has good compression, the mechanic said that everything checked out and it was one of the better used saws he had had come through. So a new 25" b&c later and it's lookin good sitting in my garage. The 290 will now just be my limbing saw.

Thanks for this site I've spent many hours using the search comparing saws and opinions.

Sounds like you got yer money back ten fold outta the 29 which is hard to do. I think its safe to say if one man runs 5 gallons through a saw a week then that man needs a dam head shrink.

Rep for choosing one hell of a good saw. Gotcha self a good one. Hard to beat the 25" on this saw for everyday use. I run a 8 pin sprocket on mine set up just like yours, with a razor sharp chain speeds up the cuttin.

I have an 046 mag with a 25 bar and I love it! A very good saw. I am sure u will be very pleased with it. With as much wood as u r cutting you should have ATLEAST (lol) 2 saws anyway. Happy cutting!

DP Cover

A Dual Port muffler cover from Stihl really makes the 460 wake up. Turn up the H screw and have fun!

good luck with your new 460!
great weight to ponies saw...love mine

Well I got the 460 out for the first tome today, I ran 4 tanks of fuel through it. I know it's not fair to compare it to my 290, but the 290 is the only saw I've owned so I've compared it and The 460 is a beast, I put a lot of cedar on the ground. I almost don't want to run the 290 anymore, but there is no way I could spend all day limbing with the 460. Money well spent, this is a killer saw!

When I run a 346xp or moded 445 for limbing and not the 460 all day then there is some life left in me at the end of the day. Things get dangerous when you get tired so cut smart and go home safe. Really glad to hear your enjoying that 460!
