I have a 028wb that I'm not sure of the year model. It has the throttle saftey on the grip and the tank and handle are metal. I think it should be 1981-84? Question is this. The chain sprocket is different than shown in my manual and the parts breakdown at the dealership here.Take off the side cover and there is the sprocket, no rim set up--yet.Remove one "E" clip and the sprocket only comes off, seperate from the clutch drum. The oil pump drive gear comes off with it. After removing the inner side plate you get to the oiler and cltch drum. The drum is a two piece deal, the sprocket has two dogs of different size that mate up with the clutch. I want to upgrade to a rim and drum set up, but I ain't found anything that looks like this. Can anyone understand what I'm talking about? Where to get needed parts? This saw has a front hand gaurd that moves like a chainbrake, but on the inside there is nothing, and it don't look to been removed, nothin there to begin with, if this helps any. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks y'all-Robert

028

You have an early version. The sprocket is no longer available in that form. 2 choices. Get an update kit from Stihl or, find an 028 with the correct setup, used. Alot of them around. If you don't find any, let me know. I may still have one around. Not selling any used 028's anymore.

Stihltech; Why no longer selling used 028's? Such a great saw. I just bought a new 1985 model, still had the clear plastic over the badging. It is a 028super with quickstop. I just want to get my other one up to date. So I can just get a later model "kit" to put on the drum & rim set up? Thanks-Robert

028

Just not cost effective to rebuild anymore. If I take a nice one in trade, sure. But if it needs any major repairs, into the pile it goes. I still have many of them out there. Probably is their best model.

Ol Rob, The Stihl bar and chain catalog lists two conversion kits for early 028's pn. 1118 007 1029 is for the spur sprocket kit, pn 1118 007 1003 is for the rim type. Both are 7 tooth .325 pitch but the rim type will accept other pitch rims. Also the catalog says the early version is before serial # 6552119 (1980)

Thanks Stihltech and sedanman. Nice to have a sorce for hard to find info. I will check into it. Since I have a newer version I may just ebay this saw. Thanks-Robert
