Hello all, quick question:

From what I know, I have always felled front leaners using a fairly standard notch, and a bore cut, leaving a hinge appropriate to the degree of lean on the backside. Here is my question . . . what is the BEST way to release the trigger?? I have heard of and seen a cut below the level of the bore . . . I have seen a, angle cut down toward the bore cut (dogstooth?),and Ive seen a cut level with the bore. So what do you guys use/feel safest with, and why??

Just a guy trying to learn, from CT.

I'm interested in this as well, a guy and I were talking on this at a side job we did Sunday. He had a different technique than me and both worked. I would say it would depend a lot as far as I'm concerned with the type/ characteristics of the wood and the degree of lean. I haven't seen coming in below though. Interested to see what everyone says.

I always cut level with the bore, sometimes from inside the bore cut and out the back. Depends on how assured I feel about what's going to happen when I release it.

I always cut down to the bore cut to release it. Like at a 45. Why? Just to make sure I hit the cut. Never thought about cutting up.

The vid above is not the felling technique we are talking about.

When you cut the trigger above the bore cut.

Wow! I've never had that happen to me, but I can certainly see the concern now. Great video, thank you for posting it. I've learned something here today.

Flint.

That really sucks when that happen while taking a big section up in the tree and the saws attached to ya. All you have is the handle and tank attached to you afterwards.
