Has anyone compared the cost per gallon of aviation fuel versus a good canned fuel like Aspen 2 ? I'd be curious which is cheaper, obviously after mixing decent and readily available 2 stroke oil into the aviation fuel.

Re: AV Gas in your small engines...
This is a +/- issue.
Pros: AV Gas won't 'go bad' in storage like ethanol fuel will. You have a higher octane which will work better with higher compression saw motors.

Cons: Currently, AV Gas IS leaded fuel. Not sure you want to run that in your motor that isn't designed for it. You can REALLY foul your spark plug if your carb is rich. And lead fouling might as well change the plug. There ARE some suppliers that do have 100UL (GAMI, SWIFT) but the FAA hasn't fully approved those fuels yet and they're not widely distributed.
Price - it depends on where you live but 100LL ranges from mid $4.50-ish all the way up to ~$10 per gallon. That's just looking in the midwest.

Go to the [Layers] tab at the top click on the [FBO] tab in that sub-menu and select the fuel you're looking for.

Your best bet is to find ethanol-free auto fuel nearby.

Plus if saw has a catalyst fitted, like a lot of saws these days, Avgas will destroy the cat quickly

100LL avgas near me is 5.60 per gallon. No comparison in price with canned, much less expensive. Plus, I mix 32:1 for big saws and others, and 32-40:1 for Stihl 4mix trimmer/pole saw using Ultra as recommended. Depends on how much use and fuel burn you have. Have run many gallons through the 592XP, and no issues.

Be very careful about 100LL in 4-mix, imo. I don't own any 4-mix but did burnup an 4-cycle BCS Acme 6hp tiller motor after 25 years on 100LL. Never seemed lean until guttered the exhaust seat. Had to replace short-block. Switched it to Ethanol Free pump gas after rebuild.
Trimmer carbs in my experience lack jetting adjustment needed to counter lean fuels; either 100LL or heavier oil ratio.

It dependents on your circumstance. Here's some comparison. Sorry about detail but you asked. Easy enough to answer if research the question. I've explored this question thoroughly for myself.

The fuel station offered Ethanol-free (E0) fuel is a practical solution. Obvious advantages & only slight cost premium. Otherwise run the E10 stuff, dump tank back to your can, & after-run on any of the Alkylate / Canned Fuel Mixes.

Price per gallon where determination basis is 16oz Echo Red Armor purchase (Home Depot $16.97, 16 oz squeeze bottle, makes 5 gallons of 40:1 mix
... or 3 oz extra oil mixed 50:1, makes 6 gal. fuel mix)

After fuel, 6% sales tax (if retail), & 2-cycle oil cost
• Pump Gas: $7 - $8 / gal.
• AvGas 100LL: $10 / gal.
• Canned Alkylate Mix: $30 / gal. to over $40 / gal

AvGas is an Alkylate plus a specialize aviation purpose additive package. Assumes an interested party can even buy it. Are prohibited sale situations depending on the airfield. Also, health risks, are documented Carcinogens whether 100LL or 100UL.

In my experience the plug fouling is caused by flaking combustion chamber deposits / piston deposits. Do research, many sources of information, Lead Bromide is a brownish ash that forms during 100LL combustion. Pistons will not run as clean as pump gas & periodic plug fouling (shorted electrode). One of many choices about Fuel & Oil selection.

Details on cost factors, Nov'24

MoGas 89 (E10): $6.88/gal
[$3.49/gal includes tax, $16.97 2T oil = $34.39 per 5 gal mix]

Rec-90 (E0): $7.89/gal
[$4.50/gal includes tax, $16.97 2T oil = $39.47 per 5 gal mix]

AvGas (100LL): $10.14/gal [$6.75/gal includes tax, $16.97 2T oil = $50.72 for 5 gal mix]

Sunoco Optima 95 Unlead or VP C9: $26.87/gal [$90/5 gal can, $5.40 sale tax, $22 vehicle gas 100ml trip to Performance Shop = $127.40. Plus $16.97 2T oil = $134.37 per 5 gal mix]

Aspen2 (if can buy locally) similar to...
VP SEF 40/50:1 mix: $29.64/gal [TSC $6.99 / 32 oz can, $0.42 tax = $7.41 per 32 oz]

TruFuel 50:1 mix: $29.58/g [Lowe's $23.98 / 110 oz can, $1.44 tax = $25.42 per 110 oz]

Red Armor 50:1 mix: $47.09/gal [Home Depot $38.18 / 110 oz can, $2.29 tax = $40.47 per 110 oz]
