There's an offer for 3 cords of split and seasoned maple for $200 about an hour away. I'll need to rent a truck to get all that wood. I figure the truck will cost around $75 ( I haven't called anyone).

Is this worth it? I've got about 2 cords now (not counting the recently dropped off stuff).

Thanks-

If it is 3 full cords it is a very good deal even with the truck rental. Around here 1 cord now goes for about $150

If their talking about full cords then that's a steal. I take it you're going to rent a box van type of commercial truck?

Okay, just called (this was a CL ad)... he said it's Red Maple, Oak, other hardwood- no softwoods. Split and stacked for a year or two... BUT... it's about 3 or 3.5 full size truck loads. By my calc, a truckload is half a cord. Now I know how people estimate, So this sounds like a cord, cord and a half. With the truck rental (U-Haul moving truck), I'm thinking this isn't such a good deal. Is it?

going to need to see it from a few angles so we can all estimate how much is there

Here, it brings about $240 - $300 a cord for good hardwood, split and delivered.

Will a standard boxvan haul 12,000 pounds in one trip ? Better figure on 2 trips to get it all. That good deal won't be so good when an axle housing breaks and leaves you standed on the side of the road in the rental.

A 2 or 2 1/2 ton chassis with box should have the capacity but you start to lose the good deal to the cost of fuel.

I saw that add too. Sounded like a good deal. But that is a lot of weight for one trip. What would that truck get for gas mileage when weighted down ? ? ? You would have fuel both directions and to and from uhaul lot.

Could be a difference in interpretation. When someone says full sized TRUCK I have to ask full sized PU or full sized FARM/WHEAT/GRAIN truck. There is quite a bit a diference there.

If it is 3-4 PU loads I'd find wood closer to home. Unless I was going to run out soon and there was none closer.

If it is 3 - 4 TRUCK loads it sounds to good to be true, follow up on it before going the distance.

He said "pickup truck, full size, long bed..ya know, 8ft long."

There's wood to be had closer for less.

He was a nice guy and I'm sure the wood was good quality, but it isn't 3 cords. This one falls into the Craigslist "too good to be true" list.

Thanks everyone!

I had wondered if it would be profitable to rent a Ryder type truck to move a lot of wood over a distance. I wouldn't wanna get it stuck on a trail in the woods though.
