Matt,
When you get into the big stuff, it is one heck of a lot of work, as well as wear and tear on equipment and the body, to lower wood. And adds many $ to the job price.
That said, David, the fellow who worked with me for six months, and helped me fall that big fir in the tight spot, is soon removing a 175 foot fir, about 50 inch butt, soon. He has to lower everything, and wishes the company owner had bid $6600, as he figures it will take three days. I don't know what they got for it, but it wasn't that much. He'll use a 300 foot 9/16th line for the top and upper sections, then switch to his new 1 inch bull line. Said he may not bother with the 3/4 inch line I just bought for him, as that would mean changing the rigging setup twice instead of once.
And I have a 110 foot, 42 inch dbh fir to do soon, that the crane co doesn't think they can get to. I may be able to drop some chunks if we verify the underground utilities are not in the wrong place, and if we move a couple rhodies. I got $1600 for it, plus 750 for the crane...so probably 2250 without the crane should be fine. I think we can do it in one day.....some real long branches over the deck, house, and plants.
Pic is of that big fir, the old thread is entitled "Falling a big one" for you newbies...check her out!
