Every time I bring my rakers down, I allways seem to have one cutter that wants to snag the wood.
I count the number of passes I make on each drag, allways rounding over on the final two strokes.
I mean, when I'm through it's throwing shavings and cutting like a bad mofo. Its just that there allways seems to be that one dam tooth(I think its the same tooth) that wants to catch in the wood.
Its kinda hard to inspect that tooth cause by the time I've gotten it outta the cut, I've lost the tooth I'm tring to inspect.

I would grade my filing skill at something like a B+.

Any advice on eliminating that snaggy tooth?

BTW Mike, my GF just saw yer signature... ???? near choked on her coffee laughing...

:D

Like everyone else says, use a gauge. I got the .025, .030, and the .035 a few weeks ago from the Sthil dealer. They are the long type that agverages the cutter heigth.

as to goals tried for in sharpening a chain.. id recommend the gage guide mentioned and an roller guide as the one sold by husky among others ..
no offense just mo.. and trying to help..
good luck..

We all have different skills.I'am like Tony,Husky makes a good roller guide. You can buy it with a depth gauge attachment the will set raker depth for each individual cutter (not a average like some depth gauges).

This may sound like overkill, but I file all my teeth to within 10 thousandths of an inch in length. I then measure my rakers with a depth micrometer across the tops of the teeth. It works slick. Not perfect but works for me, and my chains seem to cut OK.

Averaging raker height guage?

Why is that a problem. If the teeth are uniform( as they should be) the rakers will be 100 % uniform too. Lot more so than coo unting strokes or sighting in on the clouds!
