Over the holiday break I visited the former Partner NE distributor.
I was there on a research mission and had called and been told I would be able to run a top handle saw I am interested in carrying. I was able to only look at and feel the weight of this saw and was told there were no test units available to run (there was a rack of the entire brand line saws gassed up and with saw dust on them.......perhaps they were all in for repair? who knows)
Before and during my trip I was in contact with a poster here about his P-85 that he had picked up for very low money. The man behind the counter brought his saw out and we removed the cover to see what coil he needed and I was told by this tech that partner had been the only saw that ever used a thyristor in an ignition system. I refrained from attempting to explain to him that all electronic ignitions on small engines use a thyrisitor of one type or another and marvelled at yet another dealer taught technician running on about industry buzz words.
I had brought 2 different type ignitions that would work for this saw but had not brought an old standard points type coil and the tech flately stated that the ignitions that I brought would not work.
The coil needed for the 85 is one of the most common coils ever used on points type chainsaws and the tech stated that these coils were "obsoleted" by Partner in the 70s or 80s.
I just wonder what is to become of this quite good looking P-85 as it is sitting on the shelf at a repair center waiting for an exact coil with a Partner part number??????
PS The repair center is the distributor for a saw line and also a dealer for a saw line they used to distribute.
