I just sharpened my chainsaw blade for the first time.
It is cutting much faster with a sharpened blade but I noticed that the wood chips
left by the saw are long and stringy. Not cips or dust.
Does this mean that I cut too deep on the cutting tooth?
Is it a big problem?
This is on a stihl MS 290 if it matters.

It sounds like you did a good job of sharpening. Chips should be 2 to 3 times longer than the width for a good sharp chain.

I like it when they do that. It only happened to me once,,,I dont know what I done,,,and cant get it to do it again. It sure did cut good though and was kinda aggressive....the way I like it. :msp_biggrin:

It's the right amount of hook and raker height with the gullet really clean. I can notice a big difference in chip length with the gullet being cleaned really low. I go all the way to the tie straps round filing or square filing.

I just buried the 32" bar with full skip on my Husky 2100 in fresh maple and the harder I pushed the bigger the chip. If I cut like normal I got 1/4" chips but if I pushed really hard I got 1" chips and the saw did not slow down.

I remember a long time ago when I was'nt as good with a file I had my old 066 throwing noddles while crosscutting. I don't know what it was but the chain was about done. I am not sure how it happened either. It was like I was noodling but I was just crosscutting. It cut like that until I got rid of it for a new chain.

It was before I realized the importance of having all the teeth the same length. I think it may have been that the teeth one one side were alot longer than the other side.

Thanks for all the replies.
Here is a pic of a handfull of the long woodchips I was talking about.

Almost sounds like you were making noodles and not cross cutting, any pics?

:censored:, Mine wasnt throwing chips that long!lol That does look more like noodles.

I cant say for sure, but seems like I read somewhere that if the side part of the cutter isn't right it will tear the wood out, instead of cut it....but like I said, I cant remember exactly.
