the 044 is back together but i cant get it to settle down its up in the high rpm but i dont wanna break anything can i settle her down easy? i didnt go into the case and it ran sorta ok before for a saw with 90psi compression all i did was piston and rings everything else was good

You more than likely have an air leak someplace, or your throttle linkage is stuck.

Walk it through, piece by piece. Use WD40 to spray on the seals and intake boot. If it shapes up when the spray hits it, you have your culprit.

old saw what do you mean it shapes up? do you mean bubbles? im no good with technical terms

No, acts like it should. The WD40 will block a small air leak for a few seconds. Essentially, the saw runs right for a few seconds, then starts misbehaving again.

What is high rpm?

I built a 044 for a guy a few months ago - modded it - and had to remove the limiter caps just too get it to run a little richer. With the high jet turned all the way back it was still running at 14,400. Removed the caps and set it a 13,600.
The best mod I ever did and it was not even mine.

i dont know what rpm its turning at but i know its way to fast for an unmodded stihl with a new piston and rings to wear in nicely in an old cylinder and it seams to be going faster than the 460 does at full rpm no load

One way or another you need to figure out what RPM it's runing at... and do, or get done, a pressure test..

First, reset your carb to one turn out for L and H. If it's reving too high still, open the H even more. If you need to go more than say 1 1/4, you are compensating for an air leak... or a fuel blockage, and you'll soon be back at 90lb compression again...

so after soaking this thing in wd40 with no results i figured a heaver grease might help me and it did i started with the case seals and as i went along to other seals i knocked the ring off the intake boot some jacka$$ forgot to tighten it when they put the saw back together thanks for the help it helped me figure out the husky 335 and the stihl 031
