hi my name is dan. I got a 290 from my son that somebody at his work ran straight gas in it. smoked the cylinder. I got a new after market cylinder and piston. I am going to try to switch the old with the new. I have never tried this before but Im 49 and i thought its about time I learned. I have read alot of your forums and think there very funny so i thought what the heck. also i should add they are very helpful. my ? is do any of you guys have any hints for switching a bad cylinder with a new. I did get a stihl chainsaw book from the library.

its not really that hard, its just that the saw you are working on, you have to nearly disassemble the whole thing. Pretty involved just getting into the 290, verses other saws where you pull a cover and a few bolts (comparatively)

You can also just get an entire used motor for about $75 and just drop it in. A lot cheaper -a cylinder/piston will set you back $200 list from Stihl... if you can save the cyinder, an aftermarket piston will be all you need.

There are no aftermarket 029/MS290 cyinders that I have seen. The pistons are available from AIP and Golf.

There are also many used P&C in good shape from a variety of sources.
