Well today I almost finished my 044. I got everything on it except the chainbreak and muffler. For some reason my chain brake handle was bent and so I'm having trouble fitting it on. I have another one somewhere I just need to find it. I just ordered the muffler cover tonight since that's all I'm missing.

I went to start it up with no muffler or bar and chain. I know I shouldn't run it without bar and chain but it was only for 5 seconds and I couldn't help myself. Should I not be running it without muffler either? Anyway, it popped on the second pull with the choke on and started on second pull without the choke. I only had it running for 5 seconds so I couldn't tell how it idled or anything. But in that 5 seconds the rim sprocket came flying off when I blipped the throttle to get the switch up off the warm start position to the run position so I could switch it off. I was going to get a new clutch drum kit anyway so that will wait till next week when I get back. And hopefully my new muffler cover will be here by then and I'll get a new bar and chain when I pick up the clutch drum kit. I'll get some pictures next week when I put the muffler on. And am I supposed to have to depress the throttle a little to switch from warm start to run?

hmmm... The chainbrake handles don't bend... Make sure you have all the parts installed correctly and the pivot arm inserted into the handle before trying to fit it. You may need move the small detent in the case back with a screw driver to get it to sit down.

Yes, moving the throttle will take it from warm start to idle.
Running without a bar and chain is fine. Without a muffler? -don't...

Rim came off? Did you have a circlip and washer installed on the end of the crank?

I'm pretty sure it's bent but I'll check again. I'm pretty sure I had the circlip and washer installed correctly. Maybe I had the washer on backwards. Pretty dumb mistake if I did.

I doubt it,,,,

if the washer was backwards I dont think you could get the circlip on,,,,

I'm pretty sure the circlip was on. Which way does the washer go? I've had it both ways and one way the circlip wont fit on but that way is the way Andy said to do it(unless I misunderstood it). The way it wont fit on is stamped side down but I had it on stamped side up last night when it flew off but I'm pretty sure the circlip was all the way on unless it's old and loose.

Andy, I'm positive the chain brake is bent. I just went out and looked at it. I could be wrong since I haven't had much experience with it. I'll see if I can get a picture tomorrow morning or monday when I get back.

Evan

Yes your able to still put the circlip on with the washer backwards.
Is it really tight if it's on right and loose if it's backwards? One way I can just barely get the circlip on(I think stamped side down) and the other it goes on really easy.

Evan

Hmmm... Nylon doesn't bend permanently unless it is blasted with misdirected exhaust!
It very well could've been. I got it with a bunch of used covers, handles, etc. I'll try to get you a picture. The other handle was in the house for awhile and of course I'm having trouble finding it now.

Evan

Good advice. Also make sure to buy the circlip from a stihl dealer so the thickness is the same.

Ok here are a couple pictures.

First picture is of the chain brake. This is where it connects to the actual brake mechanism.

Second, this is from the front showing the chain brake.

I think the handle is bent but am I doing something wrong on installation? Thanks.

Evan, Evan, Evan, What are we gonna do with You???? almost all of the Stihl chain brakes have a bit of offset built in right @ the pin attachment point, there is a couple of little linkages that are involved and a bit of a process in getting it re-assembled correctly,,,,If you need help send me a PM and your phone # and I will talk you through it,,,
