Any one have any experience changing the direction of a branch by using guy wires or other means to redirect it's growth. Like a bonsai tree.but on full size trees. Another example would be to redirect a branch upward to train as a new top in a damaged or topped tree.
I'v done this on young fruit trees using sticks and it worked well but never a mature tree.

I had a job where we guyed up douglas fir that fell in a wind storm and were left down for almost 3 months when we stood em up they had already started to bend to correct themselves , we just pulled the tops over time very easy with turnbuckles and cable . Then after they were rooted nicely we took em off and all is still good with them , it just takes time and and easy pull ....... I mean real easy .

No experience in training a branch except for small fruit trees, but on large topped conifers, the upper branches naturally curl upward to take over as leader. In some situations, we have subordinated several of the tops to leave a dominant top, which will become a single leader in the future.
