Do you all remember your first limbwalk? Here's a pic of my first. This is only the fourth tree that I've climbed. My brother had a fairly big Cottonwood that had a dead hanger he wanted removed. I did it for free just for the experience. What a rush!

Hey Red,
We all remember our first limb walk, thanks for sharing.

One thing though- are you wearing a baseball cap or a hard hat?

PPE- it's a beautiful thing.

Food for thought. ;)

Yeah, I know, it's a ball cap. My next order of equipment is going to include a helmet and saw chaps for ground work. I was wearing hearing protection and safety glasses though. I had a feeling one of you guys would pick out the lack of PPE.

i am so tired of hearing about ppe what good is that hard

But thats just me. :)

True if you were to fall 100ft a helmet isnt going to do much, but if you are 20ft out on a limb and lose your footing and swing back into the trunk that helmet could mean the difference between you being knocked unconcious or not. In the event that you were knocked out cold, who would be coming up there to bring you down? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM? If you cant afford a helmet right off the bat, you can pick up a bmx helmet at Wal Mart for 15 bucks. And no Im not talking about the goofy bicycle helmet you see on those spandex clad cyclists out in the city park. They have vent holes in them and really dont get that hot. Right now Im using my snow boarding helmet since my ROC got stolen.

Sounds like too many Bud-make-make-you-wisers on a Sunday evening.

I was climbing up a euc one day when a piece of deadwood about 4 inches in dia. and 2 ft. long fell and hit my hard hat.
I would have really been hurting with no h-hat on. I prefer the regular construction type hard hats. I tried the rock hats and soccer hats....I found them too hot. I usually place a small hand towel over my head, then the hard hat with the rachet knob adjuster. Comfortable for me and it has rarely fallen off.

First limb walk was long time ago in a old willow tree that my grandmother had in her yard. Learned a lot of basic stuff in that tree. Tree was only about 60' tall and the limb was about 20' off the ground but it felt like a mile up. Remember my nana yelling out the window to 'get out of that d*mn tree before I busted my noodle open' All gone now but thanks for the memory.:)

Redbull, I do remember my first limb walk. It was in my big white oak in my back yard that is perfect for learning the art of limb walking. Yes it was a big rush and it still is, thats part of the reason I love to climb. I dont have a pic of my first limb walk but, here is a pic of the smaller of 2 white oaks I have in my back yard that I climb around in. I was removing a big dead limb at this time last fall. :)

Are you sure you all are talking limb walking or crotch climbing? Anyone gonna post a pic of this limb walking? Whats up the first pic with double tie in? Maybe sherrill should start selling balance beems for some to put in the back yards for practice. Remember to wear your helmet I read earlier on another post what may happen if don't, you might start dropping tree trunks in the back of your trucks.

I too can remember my first limbwalk .......... but I would have to say that one of my most memorable walks was a few years back during the SSA climbing competition held at TCI Expo Milwaukee.

For those who aren't familiar with competition rules, the climber must manouver/walk out to a pre-placed bell/marker, lanyard in, ring it, and return safely to decend, all without placing too much downward force on the limb, therefore, causing a hanging throwbag to touch the ground. As a result, climbers have to be resourceful and not just run out the limb, for if the bag touches the ground, points are deducted!

The following two pictures are different angle of me moreless walking horizontally to allow my force to be displaced side-to-side instead of downward. The tactic worked and I had a great time!
