Amoungst My Saws........Fool That Has Too Many!!!
I am not sure whether this was covered before, so here goes. I had to remove two leads off of a Walnut tree today. Since this was not a total removal spikes were not in the picture. I could have used a ladder to get up to where I needed to be with the spikes but I didn't want the hassle of having to look at my foot placement on every move when I was pruning some other limbs on the leads that were staying and getting near the base of what was being removed. What is the method of choice for you other members when faced with this scenario? After a long rainy night the moss covered bark was real slick, still I went the "no spike" route.

Do like my old boss used to tell me, gaff up the back of the tree so the customer doesn't see the marks.:D :D

Just like you said, no spikes.

I will wear em if I have to do a lot of blocking down. But if it's just standard roping, I just treat it as a trim with a limb removal.

Eh?

It's amazing how many "climbers" don't care about this. Pretty sad!!!

Just call me weird :D for considering the tree and the homeowner!!!

If at all possible, I use a ladder to get up to the lead being removed and then climb the lead with gaffs. If we were talking about something like pine or spruce, then no big deal... but my experience with that kind of work has mostly been with yellow locust.

I'll rarely switch to spurs on a limb removal, can usually get away with rope climbing, if necessary use a loop runner as a foot hold.
