I'm afraid it is time to bite the bullet on this saw 041AV Super ser 5470487. I was running it today and the the handle "felt funny". It feels like it is broken right behind the throttle (about the mid point of the handle) under the plastic/rubber cover - can me moved side to side slightly bending at that point. Then saw the filter cover was loose...yep broke the stud off flush with the carb plate again. This saw had done its duty before I got it with a logger and I have put some wood through it. Power head is still A1 but the other things are 'fix one, then another' etc.

I need a more modern saw that will haul a 28" bar. What Stihl and Husky models do I look at? Note that I want it to be 'built to run' a 28" not, 'Can a 28 but best with a 24".

I don't know if I will buy as at 72 I don't have that many years left out there. It does leave me in a bit of a bind though as I am working stuff that runs 30" (small) up to near 48" and trying to do that with a MS310 20" is a biatch (I think that is how he spelt it) for falling and cutting up the butt log.

Hands down a 440. You'll love the speed. I run a 32" bar on mine with full chisel in hardwoods with no problems.
Now if your going to sell that ol' 041 I'd be interested.I'd like to have one to go with my old 041 farm boss.

That is under consideration.

I did have in mind the 440. Will have to do some checking with the sponsors here. Last time I was at a dealer 6 months ago the figure of around $500 springs to mind but I may be wrong.

Went quick shopping today. Offer of $329 for an Echo 670/24" used from a rental. Husky/rancher/24" $429 at the dealer. A bit shorter than I want but beats nearing $600 for a bigger one.

Picked up the 670 and was shocked at how light it is compared to the 041. I guess I am just used to horsing that moose around.

I think the Dolmar 7900 is good bang for the buck but dont know what dealers are in your area.

Oddly enough I had never seen an Echo or a Dolmar but found both at the same dealer (over 600 for the Dolmar). Dealer is the rental agency with the 670 Echo.

Still dithering over buying another saw. If so it will probably be the Echo. I keep mentally picturing those 30-45" stems and thinking how much fun it won't be with a 20" bar. That extra 4" doesn't sound like much but it does make a difference.

I just love how a guy will ask about Husqvarna and Stihl... and someone always has to throw the "other" saw in there... LOL:hmm3grin2orange:

A good used 044 or an 046 will prolly do you okay also. I am obviously biased towards Stihl... but if I was to ever buy a Husqvarna... it would be a 372XP.

I think you would really be happy with a 372XP.

Harry if you are 72 and don't know how long you might be running a saw anymore then get the Echo because it won't last that long anyway.:D

Look for a 440

Gary, what always annoys me is when they say I have had this 041AV for many years and it is finally time to replace it and then say. So what Husky or Stihl should I look at. Give me a break you should only be looking at one model in this situation. Ok i'm done venting.:bang: :bang: :bang:

It is late at night here and I'm sleepy and I must missing something there. Why would one limit oneself to only one model when shopping for a new saw?

I bought a 460 when my 041 AVE Super needed a case. What are you going to do with your old saw?

I am going to 'bench' it in a few days and see if I can fix it. If I can, I will probably put it up for bids (not ebay).

Do you have any clue on the handle problem? It moves sideways about 1/4" right behind the throttle assy. Covered in plastic so I can't see if it is broke or...

After how the saw treated the logger you got it from and then did the ob for you, why not.

Sounds like the screw that holds it together fell out, look up in the hole at the bottom. If it is broke, I have one on e-bay, cheap.

If I understand you right, you think I shoiuld be looking for anohter 041? Old technology, slow, heavy, etc.

You seem to be saying that if my first car was a ford Taurus and I was happy with it I should only buy a Taurus for the rest of my life.

Aha!! that makes sense. I will be checking that and get back to you. In checking it over at the time, I could see some other loose screws (other than the operator of course). Looks like I am the victim of the 041 (old shaky) syndrom. I figure the vibration is also the cause of that stud breaking in the filter plate.
