Few falls with no faces etc. on construction site; and dangers left around kids. The first time in Hinge Forensics Thread in Climber's Forum , in the "No Pro-Hinges" illustration; i showed some hazards etc. left hanging, and looked at some cuts like i think we always hear we're not s'posed to make. Taking oppurtunity to examine their effects etc.

i think the best shot is the warning in the splintered end of a tree fallen without a face, so that the forward pressure of the fall was met/matched by the impediment of the compression in the face from not takeing the wedge out of the face, allowing all the force to flow and not bind back at you, perhaps barberchair from all the shattering forces binding and fighting lloking to 'explode'.

Orrrrrr something like that!

As wee ants stand before these matchstix!

There aren't many like us, if you can't wave or nod passing another crew on the road a block from the job; and end up up side down in the air; Who ya gonna call?

All that aggresive energy, can be used in its place not hear. Here ye, can tip visors and toss these things around. Fold in things and views, see if they work for you.

Peace.

i see peoples wanting to be looked on as polished profession-alls; carrying on like they were loud, rowdy roughnecks behind a seedy bar; trying to intimidate and prove each other out. i guess that is the ugly side of male competition; but think it should be channeled and controlled better! The war is in the fieds against gravity and injury i feel; not against one of the few on the planet that could rescue you in an emergency the way we push the odds. Nor against the only, almost chosen; few that can share and expand your own experiences; and also can do so through this medium.

i see the possibility of quiet thinkers and learners (with their own enrichening contributions) shying away from these loud, unsettling abashments; - short changing all. For i have felt these tides in myself; but have chosen to stay in the thin times; but what of those i try now (and previously) to speak for?

i think this board is great; and perhaps haven't thanked ya for it lately. But; i think it is great and dynamic enough, to try to be just this good positive, shining thing you have birthed, without the rest. i hope i am never really taken negatively, all ways and always try to peacefully present and explore. Ok lil'sarcasm and word-play for balance too!

Thanx for everything;
and as always
thanx for your co-arboration!,

Oct. 15, 2003 (to same party as now)

i think in the last 2 months we've seen enough good people fade from here from this crap, that makes ya think how many others not quite noticed as much did too, and how many guests, don't sign up and stay; then we all lose their contributions etc.

i think it is a lot better around here when a class of Foresters, Physics etc. students find deep insights and lessons here than socilogists and psychology students! The former is closer to the aim, perhaps the latter impossible to evade being all people; but at least ya could make it a tough class for upper classmen only; where they have to study it hard, and not be so frickin'blatant!

Or something like that guys!

And i shoulda posted that as Mr. Martin was bowing out from similar frickin'belligerance.

Its because it looks easy and glamorous!

And it doesn't take a lot of money to get into the business. Rocky may be slightly overstating the case (as he's been known to do on the odd occasion), but when you see the type of work that Treespyder posted evidence of, its hard to believe someone could be so obviously unaware of what they were up against.
It shouldn't be any surprise when safety rules and regulations are imposed on the industry, but we know the squaking and lamenting that causes. Where lies the solution?

law

We all have to get a license to drive a car, but anybody can run a chainsaw.
I hate to see laws on woodcuting, but I would like to see a lot more education. It is my one beef with Stihl. There should be regional or area wide seminars given at least bi-yearly for anyone buying a saw in that time.

Just a thought.

Thanks, Spydey, I think. I mean, I am one of those yay-hoos with little or no professional training or licensure, occasionally earning some loot with a chain saw. And a strong back. Maybe even a weak mind.

Tell us, who do you think gnawed on these trees like a mischievous beaver on crack? Surely not anyone with a reputation to be upheld?

This week last I was awarded some firewood for the hauling and a few nice lumber stems. In a morning I pretty much had all cleaned up and hauled away. Two lots down, would-be loggers chewed and snarled at one mid-sized red oak in the middle of their future driveway. After embarassing myself badly on "my" lot (i had an audience to a kickback stopping just short of my ornery countenance) I was able to partly redeem myself by donating my services in removing the now-fallen oak from the access road.

It doesn't matter that I was serving my own needs for egress...the oak was mostly blocking traffic.
I think what matters is taking of pity for a poor, over-flogged stihl 031, whose chain may have never seen a file.

Sometimes I wonder why chain saw companies even bother, when they know many of their products end up in the hands of ignorant savages....

Despite all of our bad jokes the reality is that a Poulan Wild Thing is way overbuilt for the average user's abilities.:(

I'm sad to say that I share your experience with chainsaw users having no clue what so ever, how to properly use it. They tend to see it as just another tool which make sawing easier than using a bow-saw. Once I borrowed a small saw from a neighbour, who was the president for one of the biggest garden companies in Sweden. The chain was so dull you would do better off running it backwards -

Don't you have to have a permit or something to that effect to use a saw in sweden?

Permits!!

I think it is not a bad idea.

Germany requires a permit (SKT-B) for running a chainsaw off of the ground. Still doesn't cover idiots trying to fell trees like you pictured but it does eliminate those ladder accidents.

Permits would weed out the hacks.

You need a permit to prepare someone else's tax returns(CPA), or legally represent them(lawyer), but not to run a flesh eating saw and drop tons of wood:confused:

NO! NO !NO! I do not want the government protecting me from myself!. Haven't you noticed that everything a bureaucracy touchs turns to caca?:(

That sounds like a childish response but I will agree.

Homeowner/Joe Idiot can buy and use a chainsaw, fall off a ladder, and drop a tree on himself. Fair?? Not govt protecting you from yourself - right? I am a libertarian at heart and think the govt shouldn't regulated where I smoke cigarettes or smoke pot. I protect me from these things by not doing them!!

But I think pro's need to carry a permit. That protects homeowners. Heck, it would make insurance cheaper and protect us as professionals. Why shouldn't we be able to do taxes for $$, practice law for $$, or cut hair for $$. They all require a permit (license) of some sort.

Did I just hijack a thread?

Hi! Jack, I disagree. Ostensibly licensure protects the consumer but it undeniably erodes individual freedom. Freedom carrys with it responsibility. Leave me free. I'll make my own decisions about the competence of someone to pull my teeth, set my bones, represent my side, hammer my nails or care for my trees.

Well, it would definitely allow us to diversify. I could do an all in one service, Tree Service, brain surgeon, mortician, beautician, lawyer, dentist....... I am sure I could find a way to use my chainsaws w/ all of those professions. ;)

Another type of "retroactive abortion". I first saw the term in a cartoon about "dirty" cops shooting certain elements of society that were undesirable to them. They were given mommas the aforementioned procedure.
