i have heard on these forums talk about sales courses and i was wondering how many of you tree service owners have been on a salesman course..im or i like to think i am a straight talking genuine guy who gives straight forward honest advice ,but in 2004 i dont think you can live on being to nice..so im thinking of going on a sales course i'm hopeing to combine honest talk with some sales patter..i certainly don't want too end up talkiing like a car salesman all smiles and full of s**t

i have heard about a 1 day sales course in my town ..the way i see it it wont hurt to try..what do you guys think???

ive been in buissnes for quite a few years and i didnt think id end up considering sales training..dont get me wrong weve got a fair amount of work but just lately ive only been getting 3 out of 10 bids

There is more in 3 out of 10 than sales tactics.

1) Who get's the jobs over you and how is that decision being made by the potential client?

2) Most of the work I am doing now is the result of talking talent and the quality of the work. How do you rate yourself with the 'care part'?

3) You should still take a sales course if what they offer is going to give you what might be unclear in connecting with potential client.

Just one day? I'd say Go For It! It's not like you're learning to steal; more like learning to communicate effectively and meeting the needs of the tree owner. Nothing wrong with that.

I fyou present yourself more effectively you may persuade price shoppers to hire the guy who will give the best service for the $, not just the cheapest.

I have heard it said that if a person has a business, their business is people. 1 day of sales training should be a good break from the same old day in, day out stuff :)

I've studied the Zig Zeigler sales tapes, closing techniques, taken college courses in marketing and micro economics.. its all really good and has given me some great perspective...
Body language, qualifying objectiuons, understanding your USP unique selling proposition, etc... all good...
I highly recommend the course and more for all business owners..
So much of this business is sales..

I'm getting 9 out of 10 overall. 70% of first time callers. I think that means my prices are too low. Of course it could be that I'm a magnificent salesman.:p

Hey, I like that phrase. Once you figure out what the tree owner wants and needs, identify your way to satisfy. We all have our own ways to satisfy their needs and the trees' needs too (and our own!). With patience and listening skills we can target our tree skills and present our USP.;)

That makes the business of selling tree work synergistic and symbiotic.:blob2:

Good looks and charisma are handy to have :D but don't always carry the message; more understanding of psychology helps us teach the tree owner what trees need and how we can deliver it.

PS to Stumper--It sounds like you're giving away the store! 11th Commandment: Thou shalt not screw thyself. It took me a decade to learn this one--"Money? I don't need no stinkin' money." Sheesh. Money is energy--if you don't get close to what you give, you put the balance of the universe out of whack.

sales, they wont to buy your service not be sold, one day would be money well spent

The key to sales is having the skill to MANAGE the process. This is not a question of devious manipulation, rather one of you having clear objectives and a sense of how to achieve them. It's not rocket science, but it's definitely not "natural" for most people.

Go take a class - it's a great investment in yourself.

Most people out there haven't a clue, and pay for it dearly. Of the ones who do have a clue, most have learned the hard way.

Good Luck!

one trouble we have or i have overhere is ,the old education battle[yes i can here some of you yawning saying here he goes again].this seems to be half of my battle i simply hate carring out detrimental work..also im in a transition stage my prices have gone up and im realy only wanting quality work ie prunning and dismantles.. with a some management surveys and report writing

when i mean education battle i also mean educating customers regarding employing somebody with insurance and some knowledge of health and safety

maybe some marketing training may also help me and others as well as sales training any way i think i'll try the sales first..i'll let you know how it goes :)
