Who's climbing on Samson Ice?

I just switched to it from HRC. It seems a lot more "grippy"... It grabs harder than my HRC did and it doesn't run as smoothly. Granted, I'm climbing on brand spanking new Poison Hi-vy and the e2e is new. It is also considerably shorter than my HRC tail was.

Will it loosen up and run better after it breaks in a bit? Could it be because the split tail is shorter?

It runs fine while ascending, it's just real grabby when I descend. I took a coil out of it today and it was still grabby. I'm going to try it out next week on a few large prunes I have to do and see if it starts to loosen up. If not I'm going to have to break the HRC back out.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I am climbing on a VT.

tried the ice

I thought it ran fine compared to the HRC. I have had two HRC eye to eyes and both hurniated within a month. I perfer the Bee line over ice, hrc, tenex and the lockjack.

As far as your system are you climbing with a hitch climber system?

No. I did away with a pulley altogether with my system. All I use is a boat swivel snap to tend slack. Tends slack fine with my system. The new Ice e2e tends slack well, it just wants to bite down to hard and lock up while descending.

Hopefully it is just because of the new rope and not because I bought too short of an e2e.

I agree. I've used Ice, Ultra-tech and Bee Line and prefer the 10mm Bee Line over all of them. The Ice looked like a worn out rope in only a few weeks.

I'd take ultra-tech or bee-line over ice any day. The ice seemed to fray and wear out much quicker. Used it for 2 weeks an threw it away, no place for that used up p.o.s. e2e in my gear bag.

Well, I broke my rope and split tail in this past week and it's running smooth for me now. Was just new and needed to be broken in.

I'm not really that particular about spit tails. I usually buy what's cheap. Figured I would try the Ice this time since that's all they had in stock in the length I wanted. It's running smooth for me now with no problems. I'll prolly try Beeline next time.

I used beeline, switched to ice for something different, liked it, bought more, tried HRC, back to ice and will probably be going back to beeline eventually. I've found with the VT and the other more "advanced" friction hitches that you'll constantly be tweaking it. Depends on how new it is, whether your rope is wet or dirty, how many wraps or braids you take, the length of your tresse cord, etc. There are just far too many factors in these newer hitches to make up your mind on a single use. I've tried dozens of variations on Ice, HRC, and Beeline ( 8mm and 10mm ) on several different climblines in many stages of wear and feel I probably could have kept a 2 inch thick notebook on which reacts better in which situation. lol Right now I'm on Samson BRW with ICE, using what's essentially a distel crossed with VT'esque braids. I like it, but I'll try something else before long, I'm sure.

I don't switch up knots too much. I like familiarity and speed that comes with repetition. I like to find something that works well for me and get it down to where I can tie it in my sleep. Saves time of having to tie, inspect and retie as well as any other hangups or SNAFU's.

Considering that I climbed on a traditional system with a regular prussic my first twelve years I am doing pretty good even using a newfangled knot, lol. I still use a traditional system with a prussic when I have to double crotch or climb with my old Safety Blue for any reason. I can tie off with it so quickly that it just works for me. Back when I was teaching a kid that worked for me he he kept telling me to slow it down when I was trying to teach him my climbing knot. He said I tied it like steer wrestler; so fast that he couldn't tell what i was doing, lol.

Anyway, I've got the VT down like that now.

Am I the only one who gets a new hank of rope and a new split tail and just smiles to myself when it starts running smooth and working just like I like it??? :)

I can see that, md. I just need to find my "perfect setup" Lol. I'm pretty convinced on the BRW as my climb line it's just finding the right tresse cord material and length. I only switched a year or so back so I'm still trying things out till I get just what I want.
