Well here is an example of a good deal... Bill bought this saw from a shop that rented out saws. This one was laying in the pile of junk saws and other stuff and was complete less bar and chain. It ended up on my bench for a look see and after a new top end (off ebay powertools... something) she is a real runner. Looks like a straight gas typical rental seizure and after the new top end and a little cleaning up Bill has a great looking and running 036 Pro for about $125 all together.

So the moral of the story is- don't be afraid to kick around in the back room or ask at you local shop if they have any parts saws. Most will tell you they aren't worth fixing up so grab them and put in a little work and wham- you'll have yourself a good saw.

Jeff, I'll be down Friday to pick her up! Got a 55 rancher for you, same problem, will need a top end. Maybe some ASer will be interested in it. Being a Stihl man I have no use for it :D Can you post a picture of the finished product? Oh yeah, don't forget to open the muffler for me!

I agree, ask them, they have them! I have bought 3 complete saws from my dealer, all 3 were "junked" because of no pre-mix, so they all had bad pistons and cylinders. I picked up an 024, 036, and 066..all in the smae condition, and they are real runners now!

Also alot of dealers have alot of used saw parts. I recently picked up all my dealers used 066 parts, and there is enough good parts there to build one complete good say, and half of another.

It never hurts to ask!

Last fall I gave Jeff an 026 I purchased in 1992 that needed a top end. Jeff fixed it up, put a new GB bar on it, threw in two chains and sold it on E-Bay for $320! It all comes down to being able to do the work yourself (or knowing a guy like Jeff!). My dealer told me it would cost me $300 to fix it, their labor rate is $60 hr and of course stihl parts arn't cheap either. Since I had already replaced it with a 1998 model, I didn't want it back. I'll bet that who ever purchased it got a better saw than I did!

Looking forward to it...

Here is a pic of the 036 Pro back together. Will clean it up a little- this was just after the saw was put back togther and tested out.

now jeff that saw look to good. id be scared id scratch it..i thot u had one like mine. it got scratches an stuff on it..
u need to send it to me an let me break it in forim. oh well it ll have some beauty marks on it soon enuff i guess.:)

I totally love my 036 pro that i rebuilt. They are one tough saw! I am running 3/8 chain with a 20 inch bar. If the wood is the least bit too dry, the oiler cant keep up! I have it set wide open now, and i use 1 tank of oil per 3/4 tank of gas. Thats a little inconvenient, but not really when you see this thing cutting! Its fast, almost as fast as the 066 mag! They are real screamers, thats for sure. I would rank it as my best saw.

Matt, It will be well worth the 4 hr trip just to get my hands on it! Of course Jeff offered to ship it but since we haven't met in person yet I thought I'd travel down and kill two birds with one stone. The 036 will replace my ms390, same hp in a lighter package and that orange handle doesn't fit well with the 026, 2 066's and an 088. I have been cutting up a lot of dead red elm. Talk about dry! I'll keep my eye on the oiler now thanks to your post. The next saw I want to add to the herd is an 044, but even dead ones seem to bring a heafty price!

Jeff, That doesn't even look like the same saw! Very nice job. See ya Friday.

Hey Bill, I don't want to discourage you from meeting Jeff, but I need to meet him too, and I'll be coming right by you sometime within the next few weeks.  I'd normally turn north off 20 and take the back way through Ridott, but sometimes go to Freeport first.  Lafayette is a little out of the way for the trip, but I guess I could go north through Chicago instead of the I74/I39 route.  Let me know if you want me to mule the saw.

After cleaning it up...

Tore it all down and gave it a bath and that uncovered a few scratches but what the heck you going to use it and this way you won't feel bad about using it either. I've seen a lot worse looking saws.

Glen, I appreciate the offer but after I get done having a few beers with Jeff I'm off to Indy for my son's batchlor party! I've been threating Jeff with a visit for months and it all came together for this weekend. Where are you located at? I also do the I39/I74 thing but will go through Chicago instead of doubling back North. God I really hate going to Indiana that way but hope traffic will be light at mid day. Let me know when you pass thru, maybe we can meet up at Ridott corners for a burger and brew!

Jeff, Thats enough with the pictures! Your getting me all worked up! Don't be suprised if I show up by noon :blob2:

Bill
