after a nasty nasty frustrating day searching high and low for 21 addresses [not street addresses] in a town i do not know at all well, i have decided on and bought a sat nav system for my truck ,i have bought a mobile plug in NAVMAN ICN 510..this system was not the cheapest or the dearest but well lets say i tried a few others out and liked this model the best...my theory is a sat nav system in the bidding truck has got to save me a bit valuble time and money

my question is apart form nickrosis do any of you guys have a satalite navigation system in your vehicles ?,how do you like it? was it worth it ?

if i get on well with this i shall put one in the work truck ,the baby's pram ,and the kids bikes :)

not to hark on

not to hark on about it but, ive got a map and my mog, might has right so i can generally push my way though gaps, force folk off the road, the guy everyone hates to be driving towards

have you Gary boy'd your mog up Jamie lol...strobe lights ,alloy wheels, sub woofers etc etc

Im pretty good at land navigation, both on the streets and in the woods, but after this years elk hunt I am sold on GPS units. I even put one on my list to Santa this year, and got a nice little Garmin unit. Even with a GPS, its a good idea to keep a map with ya.

Yeah I use the Garmin Ique3600 it rocks! Real nice for estimating since it's a palm as well, and you can put your appts, contacts, etc in it.

sat nav wouldn't help us as we don't normally get an address just a description of where the job is or what the house looks like, what car is on the drive.
many a time i've knocked on the wrong door to get a blank look from the occupier

I've got the Garmin 2610, voice prompts, and touch screen. It rules, it saves a ton of time. I'd recomend it to anyone who gets lost a lot, or spends any time in unfimiliar neighborhoods...

Hey, that's nothing. Until the last decade and the proliferation of the 911 system, most rural roads weren't even marked in this state. Physical addresses meant nothing. The county from where I moved didn't get the street signs up until after 2000 (I worked the census--that was a tough job going by crappy maps and landmarks), and then some bunghole has been ripping them all down, so an address still doesn't do much good.

Hi RC, I have a sat nav in my work truck, it gives a map from cust to cust including driving directions and voice prompts in a somewhat ?????y voice I call axis Betty. I works pretty well, and I can see where for new guys who dont know the county it is much better than a map book.
Things to watchout for include: Does it list and label all streets on the map?. Will the display of truck position on the screen update fast enough to keep driver from passing his turnoffs before the display update?, and are the streets named by the name locals use??, and not as, for example, just county hiway s-8. Also the system is only as good as the match between the spelling on the work order and the speeling in the sat nav. HTH Dave.

it's very precise hotels ,farms peice of cake ,my one has voice promps ,touch screen, you can find addresses via post codes [zip codes] or just type in the adresses,it also lists landmarks etc, tons of little gimmicks on it ,cost £400 from PCworld reduced from £500

at that kind of money id want the thing to drive the truck ,price the job ,win the job,and buy me a pint on the way home followed by a bag of chips and kiss goodnight every night ,,,,,, no seriously gonna pop down and have a deek,pc world that is ,,,,,

gps etc

i reckon it could be good, im ok with my sense of direction, it may take the fun out of driving while looking at a map in Edinburgh Centre.

i reckon things linked to a tree database could be handy, knowing what has been done to trees (eg topped by the council in 1974 etc), most of it may be obvious but it would be handy.

oh and buying a pint on the way home, well that would be the business

been using my sat nav this week ,works great and saves a ton of time and fuel ,though it did take or try to take me up an un-made road /bridle way :dizzy:
