Saw envy

Ever just look at a saw and say man :bang::msp_drool::cry3: I suffer from it every day. I'll soon be sending a saw to someone to see if they can make it run because I cant. It's really frustrating to make everything else run except the one I've wanted since the first time I ran one. Maybe someday it'll happen right now it's funds or the lack thereof. Any of you guys ever run into this?

Wasn't a saw but I know exactly what your talking about. Sucks letting someone work on your stuff when you know you should be able to fix it your self.. Worst of all.. Get said thing back after they say its fixed and it turns out not to be. Talk about a kick in the head. What's the deal with your problematic saw? Lots of smart fellers on here that might be able to brain storm the issue.

That old Ford Pinto

Reminds me of the Pinto I had when I was young and poor but on my own. It would run great until it warmed up then if you turned it off, you could not get it started again until it was cold. I put up with it for months while I worked on it nights and weekends trying to track down the problem myself or through local gas station mechanics who were much cheaper than a dealer.

I finally took it to the dealer, willing to pay the big price (so I thought), before I could get back home, the dealer called and found the problem. A cracked plate in the distributor which caused a short when the metal expanded through heat. $75 bucks latter and I was good to go. I was so pissed that I wasted all my time trying to find something I'd have never found with out the dealer. Turns out the dealer knew that that was a common problem for my model year.

I love to fix things myself, but now I'm careful to keep in mind you can't be a specialist in everything....and sometimes you need a specialist...

No jealously of your stuff. Just wish my 2171 ran. Oh well I should have sold it before I spent anymore money on it. You see all these 2171/372's that run great. Then as normal there's mine. I'm not whining because atleast I have one. It'd just been nice for it to run. By the time I get it running I could've saved my money and bought one new.

No jealously of your stuff. Just wish my 2171 ran. Oh well I should have sold it before I spent anymore money on it. You see all these 2171/372's that run great. Then as normal there's mine. I'm not whining because atleast I have one. It'd just been nice for it to run. By the time I get it running I could've saved my money and bought one new.

seem to be lots of folks talking about the 2171/372 saw. start asking questions, it could be a simple problem you're over looking. It nevers hurts to ask, lots of guys have done rebuilds on them

I've asked questions I just need to tear it down again. It started out as a simple top end swap. Put it on and it won't pop. Tried a few different coils and nothing. The flywheel is fine no air leaks I could find. I'm just regretting buy the bb kit right now. Should've just saved my money and sent it off.

If it won't pop on a prime you got no spark.

I agree with dss, I'm sure you checked to see what your compression is? That would pretty much rule out the BB kit if its a decent number of course. Or was there a different reason you mentioned the BB kit?

It has spark. It gets fuel I'm just not so sure the squish is tight enough.

What is the squish or compression? Fuel down the throat eliminates any fuel issue.

You get your sled fixed yet? I got all the clutch tools in yesterday. I will finish my sled tonight if you got time come out. I'll be at my friend shop out in the boonies, 10 miles west of IC.

Adams Smith's Law of Specialization, it's more economical to pay someone who specializes in a field for their work, then to do it yourself and loose the time where you could be doing what you do best. At least that's the way I justify it. :msp_unsure:

Didn't you say that you tried your hand at porting it?

It has spark. It gets fuel I'm just not so sure the squish is tight enough.

The squish would have to be above 1/4" before it wouldn't fire. I'm sure that is not your issue.

Out a comp gauge on it and see where she's at. I assume you know how to check your squish, them two steps really could tell you a lot and most likely save you a trip.

Did you measure the squish first?

Have you had the flywheel off? You can have both fuel and spark and not get a pop if the timing is off far enough.
