I bought a Makita 6401 used from Home Depot. It starts fine, and revs right up, but when I get it to full throttle it winds back down and stalls. I let it warm up and it still does it. Any ideas as to what might be happening? When I started it and ran it at HD it did fine, but the first two times I've tried to use it, it just keeps dying. The air filter is new, the gas pick up is supposed to be relatively new, and the spark plug is clean. Thanks for the help.

probably has some dirt in the carb. Either that, or the carb needs adjusted properly...
Check for a cracked fuel line or impulse line to the carb. Changing the fuel filter never hurts either.

is the fuel line GREEN if so it might be cracked the new style lines are BLACK. A broken line will give you a air leak causing the results you have. Also check the carburetor for loose throttle and choke shafts the early designs had non nickel plated shafts that wore.
