I bought a saw from a guy who had it sitting in his "well ventilated" old barn unused for a summer. I took it home and decided to take a peek into the exhaust port, even though I knew the jug & piston were in good shape, but I was curious. Good thing I did. There was no screen in the muffler, but the thing was packed with a wasp nest inside. In that case, with a seldom-used saw stored practically outdoors, the screen would have helped.
But I guess if you were running in a wet climate region, or in the snow, why bother.
The modded 372XP muffler I bought has 2 pipes which are probably to big, and have no option for screens. You could throw a cat through them, and probably some abrasive grit as well. The screen on my 200T got, ah, lost somehow.
So when I did my own 2nd port on the Efco 981, I screened it. Another maintenance item, but it was easy to sandwich in there as opposed to a pipe.
