At the risk of sounding old, our days of finding Ash trees like that are likely behind us. I've cut several nice dead ones (30" +/-) into firewood over the past few years.

The Ash on my upstate property is still alive, but that area was logged in the past and if you find one over 20" it is a big one. But since it is woods, they are straight and tall.

NYC-DEP owns the adjacent watershed land next to the Cannonsville Reservoir and they hired an outfit to come in and cut down all their Ash trees, and they just left them there! Talk about government waste!

My trees are higher up, and it is the cold that gives them some protection, so we will see if they can beat this stuff.
When the ash beetles first came around the game commission and dcnr cut some huge swaths of ash down. Guess the thought was the beetles wouldn't be able to get from tree to tree or some such nonsense. The did it again in different areas for the lantern Flys. Good trees just left to rot and no one was allowed to cut them for fire wood. I would have rather seen them log then just cut and let the timber lay. Stupid people in charge.

Finally got the stone spread out for the shop amd leveled up. Took my roller over it, but likely I'll borrow my uncles tamper and run that over it a few times. Wish my work schedule didn't suck so bad, would have ran and got mesh and got that in and forms up. Guess that will just have to wait till next month when I have off a few days in a row again.

Stupid state for ya. They want anyone (business) that moves around the lantern fly quarantine ares to have a permit. Like that's gonna work.

Yeah, and some sort of log saying you checked under your vehicle before you left the quarantine zone... right. They are here to stay and there isn't much you're going to do about it.

Went to start cleaning up another storm damaged tree in town. thornless seedless Sunburst Locust. Will get all the down and easy parts, haul the brush to the curb. Will let a pro take down the remaining tree. I only drop trees that won't land on expensive stuff. The locust hand splits well. Pulling the very light trailer with my Prius so less than a face cord today. Will go back with the van. Wife had it playing with the horses today.
Everything along the house is cleaned up now.

Used the pole saw and the 028 WB I've been working on in another thread. The 028 did good!

So the trees laying on the ground somehow affected the ash borer ?? Or not, Other than the standing trees .?. I don't get it. The part of no-one is allowed to touch them or use them for fuel wood I get, cause it's the state.. Bunch of ***holes making the decisions. The borer seemed to have no trouble traveling anywhere without the gooberments assistance

Not sure about accuracy, but I've heard some species will build underground or on limbs etc. depending on the harshness of the coming winter.
One thing I've learned on yellow jackets in the ground is I've been able to go out early while it was still cool and mow right over the nest. The secret is to just keep going and not to come back for a second pass beside the first one til the next morning. At that point you are far enough away they don't pay any attention anymore. I've been doing this for some time now with zero stings. I have also learned to always be looking ahead as I mow. Many times I've seen a swarm where I had went over a nest on my last pass and got them stirred up. I just give them their space and come back later for another pass.
In either case, hi temps and bright sunshine greatly increases your chances of having a very bad day!
I find that any flammable liquid in the hole cures the problem quickly. Leaving a running mower over the nest hole splatters them in minutes.

The powers that be are equally foolish up here with waterborne invasives… you will have some lakes where you can’t even bring a boat to prevent the spread. However, they are surrounded by water’s that are already infected. They totally overlooked the fact that animals and birds can and will transport that stuff.

The best one is a little stream trout lake by my old house…. Every few years they would kill it off because it was full of bass and restock it with trout and then eventually it will be full of bass again. They kept blaming fisherman for dumping fish in there. They paid no attention to the swampy creek that went to another small lake. That was, you guessed it…..full of bass.

I still have the one I rode many a mile on as a kid mowing hay!! I also have the Farmall BN that we pulled it with.

when we was kids, we lived up in Pullman, WA... out on the old road to Moscow. dirt and no shortage of farms along the way. every time we saw an old farm impl with seat like that... had to climb upon it and sit...

Well, it was time to cut down these two trees,, With that done, my buddy cut the notch, and he did the back cut, then I winched the tree over. With the tree on the ground, we limbed and cut it into sections and winched the logs out of the way,

That was enough for one afternoon, I'll get back on that project later!

 👍

This may be a repeat. I thought I posted it but it doesn't show yee.

On a hard scrabble farm on a ridge above Orofino Idaho I spent many an hour riding one of those rakes behind a team of horses (1952-3) Raking was enjoyable but then I had to pick up a fork and shock wach of the windrows. 2-3 days later, team, wagon, me picking up the hay and forking it into the barn. Not fun but good physical condiioning. We finally got a baler in 1953. My last year as I went in the AF on Jan 4 1954.

There are some actual arborists on this site. 😂 just not on this page. I'd bet some of them would be happy to help with some business advice.
It's good to know where your competitors are pricewise as well.
Don't know how I missed this back in June, but before I retired I was a Licensed and Insured MD Tree Expert. That means I took the MD Tree Expert Exam, and passed. Also took the ISA exam, and passed. That makes me a real live Arborist, with a capitol A.

There was another MD Tree Expert that hung out here. I can't remember his name. He lived just a few miles from me. Always hoped we could meet for lunch one day. Last time I spoke with him he was getting out of the tree business. Now I have to go back through ten years of messages to find his name.

I just went back to 2010, I guess I have never deleted a PM. I hate doing that. I saw a few PM's to Larry, Sagetown. I haven't been to the Good Morning thread since he passed. Some other good guys that are gone. Yooper and Zogger. I told my wife to let you guys know when I croak. My saw collection will be up for grabs, first come first served. Never know, she may give the first guy all of them, bring a truck or trailer. All you have to do is tell her what my forum name means?

Don't worry about me, I'm not planning on punching out. I've got too many fish to catch. I just miss the old guys that have gone on, for what ever reason. I retired from UPS. The tractor trailer drivers bid their vacations twice a year. So a guy would bid to a different shift and a year or so would go by before you missed him. Then you ask someone, and they say, oh, he died a while back. On line forums are like that. Like I say, if you get bummed out, just go fishing, works for me.
