The smell that brings me back to cleaning guns with my grandpa is the Hoppe's #9 bore cleaner. Every time we shot the guns had to be cleaned and oiled. He tended to over oil them though. The stocks were swelling and the wood was dark where they met the action.
Oh yea , the good old days .

I usually don't mess around with 'em myself. Just cut em and get new hardware. Gotta be careful heating up certain hardware, stainless steel parts will almost certainly gall and seized if you try to heat them.
Stainless at least good stainless shouldn’t rust in place

I'm talking the "stainless" bolts and nuts on most newer than 2010 exhaust systems. It kinda rusts, looks like a little heat is all it needs to loosen, when the best course of action is to spray it with penetrant and then hit em with the 1/2" impact.

Man have we been without gunny for quite some time now.

The new regime banned him immediately last time. But they also took down my "best of gunny" thread because they said I was making fun of him. I was celebrating his tenacity and wit.

"Imbilesiles" Best diss ever.

I did some work with stainless fasteners when I was building the canoe rack on my towboat last summer. Those darn things would gall immediately if there was any thread damage to either the bolt or nut. I swear the SS bolts from 20+ years ago were more forgiving.
