Picked up a saw at an auction I intended to resell. 16", 3/8, full chisel that had been rocked pretty bad on one side. Usually sharpen mine with a dremel but this one was too far gone for me. I didn't have time to take it to my usual guy for chains that need serious correction, one hour round trip. Took it to local hardware store that had off site service. It came back a mess. The rocked side wasn't touched much and the good side didn't even cut a new edge on the top plate. The gullet was mined down into hell. Looks like the village idiot was given a grinding stone of some kind.IMG_1438.JPGIMG_1440.JPGIMG_1441.JPGIMG_1442.JPGIMG_1443.JPGIMG_1444.JPG

Not sure about paying someone else to sharpen it, but I definitely would've salvaged it... once fixed I'd say you'll get another dozen or so sharpens out of it if you keep it off the ground. Bring the top plate filing angle back to 25° & bring the cutting angle back to the ~55° it should be & you'll get a bit more out of it again.
Given the appearance of the rakers I'm guessing that they weren't even deliberately filed, just got tagged by the underside of the disk as a result of how steeply set it was

This chisel's corner is bad all of the way back, I would toss it.
This is one reason I don't use full chisel. A semi chisel would have been a bit easier to rectify and might not have been screwed up as much. I cut mulberry out of fence rows and ditches that the snowplows throw rock into. i use junk chain for that and they are small trees. I'm just a wood burner, too old to get in a big hurry.

You make a great point but I would probably save it but it would be a lot of work. I would never sharpen it for pay though and that is what the O.P. is talking about here. Bearing in mind of course that this may or may not be the worst tooth on the chain.cutter.JPG

Toss it , even if you sharpened it back to that line it's not going to cut good. I'm not buying any more full chisel. Steve

The other parts of the chain look to be in good shape and Stihl is one of the better chains.

Hopefully a lot of that is rock shine but some of that corner is definitely abraded away.

Like us, it will never be new again.

I cut up a green mulberry , about 20" diameter at 4' height, 47cc 028, marched right through it and it cut straight. Made chips and probably some dust. One side of the chain was in good condition. Too bad I took it to the wrong guy the first time.

Pics of the repaired chain?

Hunter Biden must be sharpening chains now. That definitely belongs on the wall.

Here are a few pics. As I said one side was in decent shape. It looks like the side that was rocked, he changed the grinder angle a bit to take more of the tip off. It does cut pretty well I must say. It marched right through that green mulberry.
