How much you can lower them also depends on the saw and the bar length. Longer bars drag more power from the engine, and will not tolerate more depth in the cut. For example, our 480CD with a 20" bar has enough power to cut quite a bit from them. When we install the 24" bar, I take off about half as much. The 24" bar is not ideal on that saw anyhow, but it does a very good job of running it when kept sharp.
Interesting how it is nearly unstoppable with a 20" bar, and cuts a LOT faster in smaller logs. It's also pretty rare these days to encounter a tree around here that requires more than a 20" bar anyhow. My 480CD doesn't see much use, only been out twice in the past year. I can't bring myself to sell it, I bought it in 1980 when I got married, and it's been a LOT more reliable than the wife!......Cliff
