since i often have to chunk down big wood i'm always looking for easier ways to push them off. rb tree suggested dowels awile ago. 3/8 dowels work dam well if you leave them about a 18 in long and slip them into the cut when half way through. it's makes getting them moving a lot easier.

also the cheap prepackaged wooden shims that home depot sells work real nice to keep from pinching the bar in the cut. it sure beats peeling off bark to stick in the cut.

both items are cheap and disposable and don't harm the chain if you hit them.

tip #137-89

“big belt”. :D Are you referring to those days long ago when we used pole straps? That paints a clear picture of “big wood”.

my standard belt is 8 ft, my next one is 12ft when straped to anything that i need a belt bigger then 8ft the wood gets pretty heavy to push off. maybe i'm just a wimp?

i've used the plastic wedges in the past but they end up getting hit with the chain , dropped or lost. with the cheap wooden ones i could stick 10 of them easilly into my thigh pocket and have them ready. if i drop or loose them who cares. the dowels i use out of the bucket more since i leave them longer they tend to fall out of my pocket.

I have a 7 inch plastic wedge with a hole drilled in the fat end, on the side. I have an old piece of slickline through it with a knot tied on the end. It's about 2 feet long, with a snap attached to the other end.

I rarely need it, but when I do it's nice to have.

you lazy southerners just call in the crane for big wood.

the yards are wide open down there. you probably go weeks at a time with out even useing a lowering line.:D
