I have been getting some calls for trimming shrubs and decided it may fill in
some hours. Any tree men out here doing them I will have to buy some good sheers any ideas?

I like pick pruning with Felco's and a lopper.

Shrub work can be a good revolving account you can set up to pick up on the way home some day, or do on a weekend by yourself. I've also found it easy to get the neighbors on these accounts, so that you can do 2 or 3 on a given day after a few years.

Good Point JPS But after three years Im gettin tired of pruning the same pyracantha and buffalo berry every year. Can you say OUCH!!!!!!

Its all good bro. We are Tall Timbers Tree and Shrub Service. I will be pruning forsythia one day, and craning out a huge Cottonwood the next. Diversity is good. You have to be well rounded in all that you do. It breaks up the monotomy. Hell I have even pulled out a hundred rolls of toliet paper out of someones trees, and last week I pulled out a hundred foot flag banner out of about 5 pine trees that the wind blew up there. On the other hand I will never rescue a cat out of a tree. I will leave that to Dan Krous

No, Dan Is a kick a$$ climber but I think its one of his other gigs to look cool. If I was as good as he is I would come up with some other crazy gig. Maybe I can start up Kenns pull the TP out of your trees service. At least I wont get all scratched up.

He is a big tree man in the PNW, his family has a business in Hawaii but he said it was too boring. I think he has won the ITCC one or two times.

Hey Kenn, what to you do when the chinook comes through at 75 all day long

Ornamentals

Nice job with those PJM's Jeff. They shoudl respond very well to that kind of reduction esp at this time of year...I agree, I love ornamental pruning. Easy, relaxing, and peeple will be much more aware of the quality of your work by your ornamental pruning skills. Trees arent often looked up at to inspect cuts etc, but the holly they walk by everyday on the way into the house cant be missed. They are def an arborists business, shearing if for landscapers and isnt pruning...Felcos and a handsaw is pruning.

That was last year in the fall. Start at the bottom and work your way up. :) Literally! Rubbers, crossers, big cuts first, save the snippy cuts for fine tuning! :)

I agree I would rather prune them by hand as well, am waiting for one of
those gigs instead of the flat to boogie, but do you turn it down?

shearing

Money is money...I would shear if the work was needed to help with the payroll. Maybe consider talking to the homeowner about the negative effects of shearing and the positives of pruning. It woudl make for a much larger contract next year, far more time consuming. I didnt mean to be critical, if you got bills to pay then so be it.
