I decided I wanted to make a rear grapple for picking up and dragging some shorter logs left laying around on my friends property.
I think it will do just fine.
Edit to add: that piece of log is 15" across for reference.

Dave, if you want to pull a trailer or a wagon you can weld a receiver onto that and it works good. I made a long hitch that reaches back to my log wagon. I welded another receiver on top of the beam to store it when using the grapple. Couple of pics here. Also a few pics of how I did my swivel and how I chain it up for travel.

The older mid size trucks can be bought fairly cheap, even less than a decent beater pickup. I bought a 2000 year, Top Kick 5500, cat powered, hydraulic brakes, with 12' flatbed, $4,500. Plates, insurance, and maintenance for me were huge annual costs. I did not want to get a loan for a pickup/trailer and went that route due to low up front cost, having borrowed for a piggyback forklift. The intention was to get a tandem axle flatbed to haul pallets of wood and the forklift. I'm 69 now, and staying small, using a pickup and dump trailer.IMG_4664.jpgIMG_4665.jpg

Nice work! I’ve been wanting something that could load heavier stuff into my huge truck.

But the truck dumps, so I don’t want anything that would interfere with that.
Still haven’t thought of something.
You need an arch across the back , upside down U with a winch and it would swing out and down, leave it plumb when dumping then up and in with the log. (assuming you are wanting to haul logs) if just blocks then mount a crane in the bed, let it dump with the bed.
