Check this pic out of a poor nonclimbing world champion who is using a prussic for his lanyard. I don't have a problem with carrying a phone in a tree with me. Mine is small enough it fits in my pocket. Sometimes I have two the company Nextel and my personal. One of has to get service. If something important is to come up I want to know about it. If its Dan and not a lunch break I can't answer it but if its the ex wife or someone I have to take it. With kids you never know. I dropped my phone twice now from about 60 feet and both times it was ok. I just had to reasemble it. The last time though I got a small crack at the bottom of the screen but the reception was the best after that.

Not seeing the whole setup can't figure it out what is he showing the 'silly guy' standing there?

Get your life time supply of magic cord yet?

And to stay in topic, I've 2 cell phones now. One that works and one that almost works. My kids are grown and don't call anymore anyway. Clients can wait till I hit the gound softly.

OK, I know I'm not in the same league as the competition climbers, but something in the photo that BigJohn posted puzzles me. I understand the benefts of using a friction hitch on your lanyard, but why such a long vt? For me it makes more sense to have the hitch as compact as possible, keeping it out of the way and making slack tending more efficient. I like using a swabisch on my lanyard for this reason. Maybe I'm just missing something.

By the way, is that Mark Chisholm in that photo?

Yup, that's Mark.

You'll have to go to TB to ask him why he uses such a long VT.

Currently I use a Distel and keep it as short as possible. On the rare occasions I have a phone in the tree it goes in the leg pocket of my Arborware Tech Pants.

going back to the beginning, I would agree, move the cell phone.

AL asked why use a hitch instead of a camming tool. Weight, bulk, cost, many less pieces of equipment in the loop but the biggest advantage is to be able to adjust in and out with full body weight on the lanyard. You can't do that with a cammer.

unless you have a grillon :)
actually the one i have doesn't much like the rope in it so it's not super smooth but it will release with weight on it.

what was the topic again?
k.

Just for the record please I am not saying any ill words against Mark. I would hate for it to back to him in the wrong way. I was just being sarcastic and proveing a point. That cost has nothing to do with the why some people includeing myself like the VT instead of the costly camming devices wich I do own most of. Tom... I thought you were using the positionor? I believe at one time you had two. If I'm correct here again is another climber who is not poverty stricten or without resources using a VT. If thats what you like then thats OK too. There is no right choice.

I've got a Positioner on one side and a distel on the other side of my DEDA.

On my BF I I cut off the d-rings and replaced them with triangular maillon-rapides so I could connect the Positioner directly to the saddle. With my new one I have to use a small, stainless steel screw link to connect.

Since I have the P, I use it. If I didn't have one, I'd be hard pressed to say that the adjuster on d-ring is less handy. Performance favors the P, value favos the adjuster.

My brother is getting my BF I with one P on it. He'll be using a DEDA I think so I'll find out what he thinks. This is one time in his life I think that he's pretty happy to get big brother's hand me downs :)

im not going to argue one way or the other,i have 3 polebelts,1 petzel 5/8 homemade1 sala/sanko saftey belt and a home made prussic set up which rarely gets used.i like the sala for climbing mid range trees with tight forks because its small diameter and ease of flipping the heavy end(stringy barks).ive used 3 strand 1/4' poly prop as a prussic just to prove a point.is mark brydon still 80'pole champ:confused: last i remember he was 2 seconds clear, the point about adjusters being pricey is rediculous guys.or we could be like graham and use no prussic/adjusters

Hey Tom Tom,

Are you saying your brother wasn't happy with those "Vote" pants you gave him in '73?

I have a an 8" peice of ultratech spliced on both ends it makes a total of 4 circles on the lanyard the tcc judges said I couldn't use it but it holds me up just fine. 3 years now (not the same one of course).

That kind of takes the fun out of it; sorry 'bout that.

You'd said something about a younger sibling being unhappy with hand-me-downs. I remembered (for some strange reason) those red, white, and blue vertical striped bell-bottoms which said "Vote" all over them, from 1972. Does that help?

If not, never mind. It was a stream-of-consciousness type of humor (I often think "out loud") :)
