A neighbor gave me about 1/2 cord of huge chunks of pine and some hardwood. It's WELL seasoned for at least 5 years. Aside from the knots it split super easy.

But I had a few problems with my Husky 550XP and one re-occurring problem...

The re-occurring problem is that, after sawing for a half-hour or so, it just shuts off. Then when starting it'll start...shut off after 5 seconds. Start...shut off after 2 seconds.....won't start after that.

The smoking issues yesterday....I don't think the bar oil was feeding/lubing the chain. Where do I check to make sure it's feeding right? Any tips to clearing out any clogs?

Thanks

Step one I think would be take the B&C off & see if oil comes out the feed hole with the saw running.

The shutting off thing would be a bigger concern to me though - might not want to run it until that gets checked out. If its a fuel starving problem you could cause engine damage, if there isn't any yet.

Unfortunately I can't get it "checked out" at a dealer unless I want to pay. A mistake on my part was buying it from a forum member here and although it was new in box, Husky doesn't warranty it.

This is why I posed the question, in the hopes that someone could give me specific things to check out. These aren't overly complex so I'm fine with taking it apart. I just need to know what to look at/for.

I can try the bar and chain removal.

Thanks

The running issue is the biggest concern. And, I'd start with the easiest first. Dump the fuel, and put in fresh premium fuel with the proper mix. While you're at it dump the chain oil too, and fill with a good oil. Turn the variable oiler screw up to max. Then assuming it will start, just hold the saw with nose of bar about 2" from a clean wood butt and rev the engine for a couple seconds. You should be seeing a spray of oil on the wood. If you get no spray, you will need to step further into the plumbing of the oiler. If you have oil, start cutting, and with luck, you will have resolved your running problem too with fresh fuel and a free spinning chain. If not, you should consider having it looked at by an authorized Husky service point. Warranty or not, it is not worth owning if it isn't going to operate right.

These are all opinions of a saw owner and operator, not a mechanic, authorized or not. Good luck.

I'd pull the muffler first and look at the piston for scoring. If that's fine pull the bar and clean the groove and oil oils. Then see if it is actually pumping oil. These things do require a little maintenance.

With oilers I seen 3 things . Dirt in the line , plugged up vent ,holes in the bar were not in line . I did have bad bar oil one time . Looking for clogs I would look on youtube the ones I worked on the pump is driven by the clutch with a pipe an filter going in the oil tank

Saw is nearly new. I doubt it has a bad coil. Sounds like a scored P&C, from air leak, bad mix or ? Maybe a bad carb?
