Curious if anyone can tell me what the difference in burn time might be. Specifically between pine, soft maple and willow.
I have been getting about 12-14 hr on pine this year. I have not touched our hardwood pile yet.
We have a large pile of willow and soft maple for next years junk wood. And I am just curious how it will compare to the pine. It is mostly cut/split to the same size as the pine was.
Burning it in a large homemade boiler.
Any input is appreciated.

I get about half the burn time with soft wood like aspen (similar to willow) compared to pine. Soft maple should burn longer than pine.

Hindsight being 20/20. I should have split some and put it on a rack to dry. Could have burned it later this winter (if it ever gets here) and done a side by side.

Not sure how much more winter you all want? It's plenty cold enough for me!

It's 56 and rain today around here. Good for wood consumption but not much else.
Heck if it was dry out I could probably mow the grass one more time! Mild is a understatement for this winter here in Illinois.

Pine is actually pretty dang good firewood if it is cut and stacked and seasoned properly. Larger knotty chunks burn great. They won't last as long as the maple, but longer than the willow. Dry willow is fine for in the morning or if you have acres of it and don't mind loading often. It really gets down to sub species and what you have in your area, there are huge variables.

Yeah, we're having Tornado watches here in Indiana. It's supposed to be from the mid 50's to 65 degrees over the next several days. It feels like April out not December.

I get about 2/3 the burn time with hemlock versus cherry / soft maple
