The idea of getting vast improvements in efficiency are just dreams. A gallon of gasoline contains roughly 125,00 Btu. That is all the energy there is there. Unless you can split the atom ( nuclear fission) there is no more! Present engines harness just a little better than 35% of that energy. Where the other energy goes has already been covered. slightly leaner mixtures are possible under certain conditions (such as the stratified charge engine) but gains are minimal with out occuring handicaps of cost or performance. Getting rid of the mechanical valve train by going solonoids could get you another 10 percent by allowing less friction and optimum valve timing. The idea of getting anything like the kinds of gas mileage proposed in a standard auto is preposterous! You cant get more energy out than there is there, any more than you can get pants off a bare ____! lol.
