I pruned 3 Apples, 2 Crabapples, a Pear, and a Walnut today. There are a few Walnuts around town so I occassionally work on them but not often. This is the first time I can remember pruning one in early dormancy. We had our first hard freeze less than 2 weeks ago. The leaves were off except for 3 or 4 interior twigs. The tree dripped sap out of the cuts like an early spring maple! Is that typical or did I just encounter a fluke? Low last night was 19* and it got to 45* this afternooon. I was working on it in the late morning when temps were about 40*.

Walnuts, as well as maples and birches, should be pruned after they have leafed out. The leaves absorb the sap running up through the tree, and there is no loss of sap from the cut ends. While the loss of moisture is not too serious for the tree, it is unsightly when it occurs, over here in the uk best time really is july august time apparently this is our summer time, actually it was a nice summer now we have water shortages apparently lol wtf????

around here the acronym is MADBUCK for sap spewers in winter. Maple, Ash, Dogwood, Buckeye. or so I was told...

also the acronym for the most common opposite leafed trees...connection or is someone mxed up?

I was thinking that as I was driving home today.... not sure now.

Hmmm....opposet leaved? U. americana does it too, though to a lesser extent.

We were joaking about a walnut today that was drizzling on us. "who left the faucet on up there!" Seems to happen most when you have below freezing nights and around 40 days.

Hmmm that is perfect sugar bush weather, 'magine that!
