Hello all. Just trying to find a good online resource for splicing 16 strand climbing line. Sampson web page has a good detailed (which is what I'm looking for, but for 16 strand) page for 3 strand with plenty of images at
http://www.samsonrope.com/home/pdf/3-Strand-Class-1-Tuck-Splice.pdf

I have found plenty of pages that talk about the steps for 16 strand rope but they all have minimal pictures. Here is one that is lacking images:

Is the below Fly link applicable to 16 strand in general?
http://www.uwsp.edu/stuorg/ssa/activities/splice/fly.htm

Also found one for Sta Set:

Thanks a bunch,

My guess is that no, it is not. You should do whatever splice the manufacturer recommends. NE had some problems with the original splice, so this is what they came up with.

I noticed in the pictures they show a fid with some masking tape being used to pull the core through. If you have tried this splice, you know this just won't work. It's so tight that it would just peel the tape off and pull the core right out of the fid. The reason it works for them, I'm guessing, is NE sets the machine to make the sheath looser at the end of each strand of rope, to make it easier to splice. Any other theories?

Nope. Stick with the Samson directions for 16 strands like New England Braided Safety Blue (and Hi-Vee) Buccanneer's Patriot, Samson's Blue Streak and some of the other 16 strand ropes that are out there. Keep in mind that ANSI reccomends that splicing be done in accordance with manufacturers directions. This exempts some 16 strand ropes from the "standard" 16-strand splicing directions.

The Fly is a very different rope. If you're just starting with splicing, stick with the 16 strand splice, then move up after you get that one down.

If you have any long drawn out questions, send 'em to us....we'll help you out!

Thanks guys. I guess the biggest thing is pictures or illustrations to go along with the steps. Any chance you guys who splice have taken photos of your splicing in progress. How about a good book recomendation? I'm sure the verbage on the web instructions is correct and makes sense once you do your first one, it's just learning how to do the first one.

Thanks for any info,
Brian Cooke

Probably the most comprehensive sourse is the Bryon Toss video available from Sherrill. I'm told that it is helpfull, but can cause frustration ;) .

Everyone I've talked to agrees that you should buy a bunch of cheap bulk rope and sit in front of the TV and splice eyes till your fingers are raw.

after 2 or 3 you will have some that are good for light slings and soon you will have one you will climbon and not be embarassed.

I know enough people who splice that I'll stick to tenex to do my own rigging slings.

One of these days I'll have a new flipline comming in the mail too ;)

The Toss Video is helpful, but he sure makes it look easy. Kinda made me mad. I got impatient waiting for the video and before it arrived 3 days later I had already completed three 16 strand splices. Got stuck a few times but RockyJ and Nick were quick to get me straight. My hands kept lookin' for a break but I went on a splicing binge. Makes for cool personalized stuff!:D

I'm sick of fighting the coat hanger and tape method. Need a new lanyard and life line soon. Maybe I'll try the Toss Splice Wand.;)

Nope, but I just ordered the 18" Toss wand a few hours ago. Is there something I sould know or do you have 2 of them? I sure hope it makes pulling the cover strands back through a lot easier!!!! The coat hanger method has made me  !!!!

No, you don't need two of them, but you will need a non-exhaustible supply of snares. I make mine out of scraps of technora or vectran that I've spliced. I take out a few strands and twist/braid/weave them to the appropriate length. Now I'll never run out. (I go through about one snare every 3-4 months...that's doing a lot of splices, too).

I have an idea and will also need the smaller wand to see if it will work. Sorry- details not available at this time.
